A New Women’s Movement

5   The Equal Rights Amendment  In 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment was passed by Congress:  Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.  Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.  Section 3. 7   In order to be added to the constitution it would have to be ratified by 38 of the 50 states by 1982.  By 1977, 35 states had ratified it.  By June of 1982 not enough states ratified it.  “Glass Ceiling”  More women doctors and lawyers  More women in government The Movements Legacy
