D ECLARATION OF THE R IGHTS OF M AN AND THE C ITIZEN Thursday October 10

W HAT WAS IT ? Document French Revolution (France) that outlined basic human rights that the government cant deny Guaranteed freedom of thought, speech, security and property and religion

W HAT WAS IT ? It was a legal document passed by the Assembly during the French Revolution It is a fundamental document in our understanding of human rights It made basic human rights universal (meaning that it extended to all people) It outlined what basic human rights were and that they need to be protected by the government

W HO INFLUENCED IT ?

Jean Jacques-Rousseau (and the philosophes!) Rousseau said that human rights need to be universal Rousseau said that humans have basic rights that are natural – meaning that from birth humans should be considered equal and have the right to life and liberty (freedoms) Montesquieu – separation of powers (church and government) U.S. Declaration of Independence

W HO GAINED RIGHTS FROM THIS ? active citizens French men, over 25 years old, who paid taxes and were not considered to be servants Essentially: Male property owners

W HAT DID THIS DOCUMENT SAY ?

W HY IT IS SIGNIFICANT ( IMPORTANT )? Helped France transition from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy Important to France progressing from Feudalism to a modern country Inspired people and was a significant step towards democracy Many of these human rights clauses have influenced other constitutions! (like Canada?!)

P AGE 78 Read the declaration of the rights of man and the Canadian Charter Similarities? Differences?

D ECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF WOMEN AND THE FEMALE CITIZEN

W HAT WAS IT ? A document written by Olympe de Gouges, a French activist She wrote it to show the deficiency of the Declaration of the Rights of man and the citizens

R EMEMBER : WHAT DID WOMEN DO DURING THE REVOLUTION THAT SHOULD HAVE GRANTED THEM EQUAL RIGHTS ?

W HAT DOES IT SAY ? The Declaration of the Rights of Women and the Female Citizen follows the seventeen articles of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen point for point De Gouges makes special mention that under French law women were fully punishable, yet denied equal rights! Meaning that women could be punished under the law, but could not have rights protected by it!

S IGNIFICANCE ? This paved the way for feminist activists fighting for equal rights for women It drew attention to the inequality of the term citizen

4 CORNERS DISCUSSION : Agree, disagree, strongly agree, or strongly disagree with the following statement: Human rights are given to people by the government
