1  I. What is freedom of expression?  Freedoms that allow you to express yourself  A. What basic rights are listed in this portion of the First Amendment?  The freedom of speech, press, assembly; the right of people to peaceably assemble, to petition B. Why do you think these particular rights were included? C. Because the founders of our nation believed that the right to hold and express one’s belief was essential for citizens to participate C. Why do you think the Framers thought it was important to protect the freedom of expression in the Constitution? D. It was something they valued since they didn’t have it before.

2  Individual development and human dignity; advancement of knowledge; and the maintenance of representative democracy; peaceful social change.

3  The court said that a school cannot limit a students right unless it disrupts the educational process. Students don’t give up their rights when they go to school and they should be protected unless it violates other rights and interests. Also, rights are sometimes limited if they are dangerous to public safety, national security, or other interest; or if one persons rights conflict with another persons.

4  A. What are the conflicting rights and interests in this case?  The principle is worried that teenage pregnancy article is not appropriate. He is also worried about the fathers right to defend himself. However, the students have the right of freedom of speech. B. In what ways is this case similar to the Tinker case? In what ways is it different?

6  I. How was the right of suffrage extended before the Civil War?  Those over the age of 18 can now vote, and you don’t have to own property.  II. How did African American men gain the right to vote?  The states approved the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendment to the constitution. (civil war amendments) III. How did women gain the right to vote? IV. It took a lot of work, but eventually the nineteenth amendment was passed, giving women suffrage.

9  Eventually the nineteenth amendment was passed, giving women the right to vote.

10  Women now have the right to vote in Canada.  All adult Canadians have the right to vote, including mentally ill patients.
