Order on a sheet of paper-the following rights from most to least important: Right to free speech Right to be free from illegal search or seizure Right to bear arms Right to a fair trial Right to be free from cruel or unusual punishment Right to express religious beliefs Right to a free press

4 I. Documents that influenced Colonial Americans
The Magna Carta Nobles forced King John of England to sign the Magna Carta in 1215 (Latin for Great Charter) Limited the power of the monarch- no one is above the law Guaranteed due process and trial by jury

5 Parliament England’s legislature Was created over time to represent nobles, church officials, and even the common people (by the late 1300s) The peaceful transfer of power during the Glorious Revolution of 1688 made it more powerful than the monarchy

6 English Bill of Rights 1689 Parliament further limited the power of the monarch Guaranteed free elections to parliament the right to a fair trial the elimination of the cruel and unusual punishment

7 Common Law- a system of law based on previous court decisions rather than regulations and written law when judges decided a case, they look for a precedent- ruling in a similar earlier case

A social contract theory- governments are created as an agreement among the people and their government Citizens agree to give up part of their freedom to the gov’t in exchange for protection for all If the government can no longer protect the people’s rights, gov’t can be replaced Justification for revolution

11 Why is it important to understand our English Heritage?
Our laws and Constitutional principles are based on English democratic principles. England was the first nation to implement democracy in Europe. England established the rule of law, limited government, and due process before Spain, France, or China. Understanding that deep rooted ideal of self-government explains the motivation behind Brexit.

12 Question What ideas did the American colonies adopt from the Magna Carta and English Bill of Rights? What was the significance of limiting the power of a monarch. How does due process function?

Virginia House of Burgesses- in 1619 the colonists in Jamestown formed the first representative assembly in the English colonies

17 The Mayflower Compact (1620)- an agreement, or contract, signed by 41 of the men aboard the Mayflower Established direct democracy where everyone has a voice in gov’t 1st basic plan of government in the colonies Today, small New England towns still have town meetings

19 By 1733 the 13 Colonies Had their own governments
Each had a legislative body Constitution They were self governing themselves. Read the article on Mercantilism. What were the Navigation Acts? What was the Triangular Trade?
