The Power of Persuasive Techniques

Great Persuasive Speakers

Here are some techniques to help make your writing more convincing…

PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE 1: Alliteration Repeating the first sound of different words is alliteration. They also start with the same letter. Keeping animals in cages is cruel, calculating and corrupt!

Some smug slug slid across the slide. Matt the monkey likes munching marshmallows while milking cows.

Write a sentence that uses alliteration. 1 minute to practice: Write a sentence that uses alliteration.

PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE 2:

Repetition of words creates emphasis. PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE 2 REPETITION Repetition of words creates emphasis. We must all try to write with purpose, write with feeling and write using techniques to persuade.

PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE 3 Rhetorical Question

A question which does not require an answer. RHETORICAL QUESTIONS A question which does not require an answer. This type of question is so obvious it does not need an answer and it can help to reinforce a point. Don’t you think?

1 minute to practice: Write a RHETORICAL QUESTION

PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE 4: Paint a Picture Create an image in your readers mind by painting them a picture of what you’re talking about. Imagine being locked behind bars 24 hours a day! This is exactly how animals in cages feel.

1 minute to practice: Paint a picture of… Living in the Country.

Emotive Language

PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE 5: Emotive Language Like many persuasive techniques, emotive appeals aim to engage people’s feelings, not logic or reason. If a writer can manipulate a reader to feel a certain way, that reader should be more likely to agree with the writer’s overall argument. These poor, helpless children are forced to do hours of homework every night after long, hard days at school.

Write a sentence that uses emotive language about… 1 minute to practice: Write a sentence that uses emotive language about… Animals in Cages

Hyperbole and Exaggeration PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE 6: Hyperbole and Exaggeration Use of exaggeration in your writing to persuade the reader. It involves forceful and overblown language to get the point across. After students complete mountains of worksheets at school they are forced to do thousands of difficult maths sums and hours and hours of reading for homework!

Write a sentence that uses hyperbole 1 minute to practice: Write a sentence that uses hyperbole

95% of students agree that homework should be banned. PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE 7: Facts, Statistics and Expert Opinions Using facts, statistics or an expert or important person’s opinion to make your argument seem more convincing. 95% of students agree that homework should be banned. Scientists say that failing to wear a hat increases the risk of skin cancer.

Write a sentence that uses a fact, statistic or expert opinion. 1 minute to practice: Write a sentence that uses a fact, statistic or expert opinion.

PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE 8 Inclusive language This is writing that directly addresses the reader, either personally or as a member of a shared group. If we don’t do something soon, we may lose some of the most incredible animals in the world due to global warming.
