2 Questions to Explore What techniques does a speaker use if he or she is trying to convince you of something? What stylistic choices do they make? What type of language do they use? What kind of words do they choose?

3 Goal To understand the ways that speakers and writers use language and other techniques to persuade others. persuasion = important skill for life! Important for trying to convince someone of something, to hire you, to date you, of an important opinion you have…

5 Rhetoric The use of language for persuasion
The speaker should appeal to the audience in 3 different areas: logos, pathos, and ethos.

6 Rational Appeals (logos)
Appeal to logical reasoning ability of readers Facts Case studies Statistics Experiments Logical reasoning Analogies Anecdotes Authority voices Repetition (for emphasis)

7 Emotional Appeals (Pathos)
Appeals to beliefs and feelings Higher Emotions: Belief in fairness Love Pity Bandwagon effect (everyone else is doing it) Lower Emotions Greed revenge

8 Ethical Appeals (Ethos)
The sense the author gives as being competent/fait/an authority on the subject Trustworthiness Credibility Reliability Expert testimony Reliable sources Fairness

9 “Mom and dad, I would be extremely happy if you bought me the new iPhone 5C. Not only does it have better service for me to stay in touch with you whenever you call, but it also takes clearer pictures, and mom, I know how much you love posting our family photos to Facebook. I think I deserve the new iPhone because of my hard work this school year. After all, isn’t it only right to reward such a great child? Luckily it’s only $200 because of the $400 discount I have with my upgrade.” People try to convince you of things on a daily basis… advertisements, commercials
