ELA There will be a grade on your child’s report card that is for ELA. This is the combination of your child’s reading, grammar, spelling, and AR scores.

Reading There will be a reading test for each story. The reading test will have a comprehension section and a vocabulary section. For each story, students will have: Their book that contains the story. A reading packet A vocabulary list Comprehension/Focus Questions On-line features Level Books

Grammar There will be a grammar skill for each story. The students will learn proper identification and usage of parts of speech. 3-4 classroom lessons with practice activities There is a grammar section on each reading test.

Spelling There will be a spelling test for each story. 25 words with spelling patterns. 3 practice activities

A.R.: Accelerated Reader Students will have 30 minutes each school day to read silently at their desk. During this time, your child will need to pick out and read books that are within their AR level. They obtain their AR level by taking an online assessment once each nine weeks. Their level correlates to a point value that they can be expected to earn if they read daily for 25 minutes and take the AR test on the books that they read . Their progress on this goal is monitored and recorded as a part of their ELA grade.

Math This year in math, students will have the opportunity to review, repair, and learn new math skills. We will focus on operations with whole numbers, decimal numbers, and fractions. Students will have their math books, handouts, and notebooks.

Social Studies First and Second nine weeks Social studies textbooks and chapter study guides Chapter assessments

Science Third and Fourth nine weeks Science textbooks and journals Experiments ASSET projects

Homework There will NOT be an A LOT of homework assigned. -extremely helpful and important -complete homework with best effort -on time. For ALL subjects, there will be homework assignments just about EVERY night. ALL assignments will be recorded in student agendas. Evening caretakers will need to initial the homework agenda EVERY night, ideally after reviewing the homework for completeness. It is STUDENTS’ responsibility to ask their caretaker to initial the agenda, not the other way around!

Absent Work When your child is absent, please contact the office as soon as possible to notify us and to set up a way in which your child can get their makeup work home. Absent work can be picked up by an adult or sent home with another student (sibling or neighbor). A direction page will accompany all needed materials. Students are given time to complete the work equal to the number of days that were missed.
