2 Meet the Teachers Bill Smoak: Math and Social Studies

3 Math Application-20% Journaling-20% Timed Tests-20%
Daily grades from common core standards Journaling-20% A journal grade will be taken weekly or bi-weekly. Journals will be graded using a rubric Timed Tests-20% These will be given for progress monitoring and graded every 3 weeks Teacher Made Test-Quizzes/9 Weeks Tests-40% A test or quiz will be given weekly A cumulative test of standards taught over the course of 9 weeks will be given at the end of each quarter

4 Projects and Station Work = 20%
Reading Grades Weekly Tests = 50% Projects and Station Work = 20% Unit Tests = 20% AR = 10%

5 ELA Common Core Common Core standards require a more rigorous curriculum 50% Fiction 50% Nonfiction A shift from asking questions such as “How do you relate to the character?” to “How does the character change in the story? How do you know?” Regular practice with complex text and its academic vocabulary

6 Wonders All work during the week will relate to an essential question.
Focuses on 4 main topics a week Comprehension Strategy Comprehension Skill Genre Vocabulary Strategy Students will be tested on these skills NOT a story of the week. Access to books from a free app – McGrawHill Connected or the Wonders website

7 Language Arts Grading Scale
Tests/Projects 50% Grammar tests (weekly) Large writing assignments (every three weeks) Daily Work/Writing 40% Small writing assignments (weekly) In class assignments (as needed) Spelling 10% Will be determined using both large and small writing assignments (weekly and every three weeks)

8 Science Tests/Projects: 60% Tests will be given after a unit of study
A study guide will be sent home before the test Students will be given a week’s notice before testing Daily/Application: 40% Science Journals/Notebooks will be graded using a rubric It is vital for the student to keep his/her notebook organized and up to date. This will be a great tool for studying.

9 Social Studies Textbook:  Houghton Mifflin Social Studies: United States History This school year, we will be studying American History.  Grading Scale:  60% Tests and Projects                           40% Class and Daily Work

10 Homework Policy Homework will be given daily
Expect about minutes Homework will be monitored through our Behavior Log Students will record assignments in their planner daily Please initial your child’s planner nightly

11 Behavior Management It is our hope that all 5th grade students choose to follow the 5th grade guidelines for a safe and productive school year. 1st Offense No Recess 2nd Offense Silent Lunch and No Recess 3rd Offense Parent Contact, Student Completes Behavior Think Sheet, No Recess, and Silent Lunch 4th Offense Office Referral

12 Schedules Each week your child’s schedule will shift. The schedule will rotate over a 5 week period. This will enable your child to be in different subjects at different times to enhance their success. 1st Period – 7:40-8:40 2nd Period – 8:40-9:40 Rocket Time – 9:40-10:40 Lunch/Recess – 10:45-11:25 3rd Period – 11:25-12:20 4th Period – 12:20-1:15 PE- Either 1:20-1:50 or 1:50-2:20 5th Period – 1:20-2:40

13 Wednesday Folders and Data Binders
ALL graded work and important information will go home in your child’s Wednesday Folder. Please sign all graded papers and return them in their Wednesday Folder on Thursday. Data Binders will hold all of the students’ work and data from school-wide assessments. Data Binders will allow students to see their growth and achievement of goals.

14 Remind 101 We will use this to inform you of severe weather delays and dismissals as well as occasional reminders and updates. You can subscribe to receive information by or text using your cell phone.

17 Conferences If you would like to schedule a conference, please contact Ms. Moeller at or Conferences will be held on Tuesdays unless there is a schedule conflict. Please notify the office by Friday for a conference on the following Tuesday.

18 Field Trips Be sure to have your Out of Town Permission Form notarized and turned in. Nov. 4-6 Camp McDowell (optional field trip) More information to come soon. Other fun field trips to be announced!!

19 Class T-Shirt Class shirts will be worn on field trips and special occasions. If you have not turned in forms and money, please do so ASAP! Cost is $7
