1 Welcome to Open House

2 My Name is J.B. Kinser This is my 21st year in the Sheffield-Sheffield Lake City Schools. I am married and have three children ages 14, 13, and 9. I graduated from the University of Toledo in 1997 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. I earned my Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Cleveland State University.

3 Our Team I work on a team with Mrs. Fedak and Ms. Demers.
I teach Science and Mathematics. Mrs. Fedak teaches Language Arts and Social Studies. Ms. Demers is an Intervention Specialist. She works in both of our rooms and teaches all of the subjects. This is a special teaching relationship called Co-Teaching.

4 Co-Teaching Co-Teaching involves two or more teachers sharing the responsibility for all of the students in the classroom. We both teach, collect data, work individually, in small groups, and lead instruction to the entire class. There is a lot of “WE” and not much “ME”. We are a team.

7 Grades We use PowerSchool to keep track of attendance, assignments, and grades. You can sign up to view your child’s assignments and grades. My wife and I use PowerSchool at home to monitor our children’s assignments and scores. It is very helpful!

8 Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset
We have a growth mindset in fourth grade. “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work---brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” -Carol Dweck Conversely, in a fixed mindset people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They believe that talent alone creates success---without effort. They are incorrect.

9 Intervention & Enrichment
10:45-11:30 Monday through Friday Monday and Tuesday Intervention is spent in homeroom. Wednesday and Thursday will be in Mrs. Fedak’s room. On Fridays we will do Second Step during this time. During I&E time I will be working on math skills and Mrs. Fedak will be working on Reading skills.

10 Second Step We use Second Step to teach and nurture social-emotional awareness and develop foundational learning skills. After each lesson the students will have a worksheet to practice the material from the lesson. They will also need to work out a situation with a parent, grandparent, or other helpful adult. Please sign and return the workpage.

13 Accelerated Reader Reading is very important.
We will set point goals for your child each grading period. Points will be earned for each book after your child takes a quiz about the book. AR quizzes can be taken at school or at home before 5:00 P.M. Reaching the AR goal is part of your child’s Reading grade each grading period.

14 Reading is Important!

15 The Essential 55 by Ron Clark
These are not rules, but expectations for our classroom and the world beyond fourth grade. Examples: Expectation #1: Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat. Wait to be called on when raising your hand. Attention on the speaker in class. Expectation #2: When in a line, walk single file one behind the other. Be silent, still, straight, and smiling. Expectation #3: Always say thank you when given something. Do not groan or say that you do not like it. There is no excuse for not showing appreciation.
