We need parents to be involved in their child’s education We need parents to be involved in their child’s education. With demanding schedules and being parents ourselves, we completely understand how hard this can be. There are many things parents can do to help out especially when it comes to checking the completeness of homework and studying for tests. The PTO is also a great option for any parent wishing to help out above and beyond their own child’s needs. If parents are interested in helping here at school, please send us an email. We can inform you of such opportunities as they arise. We need parents to be involved in their child’s education. There will NOT be an A LOT of homework assigned. Homework that is given is extremely helpful and important. Students must complete homework with their best effort and turn it in on time. For ALL subjects, there will be homework assignments just about EVERY night. ALL assignments will be recorded in student agendas. Evening caretakers will need to initial the homework agenda EVERY night, ideally after reviewing the homework for completeness. It is STUDENTS’ responsibility to ask their caretaker to initial the agenda, not the other way around! © Amelia Capotosta 2014

Fifth Grade follows the following general rules: Be responsible for learning the skills taught in each class and completing the work assigned. Be respectful to all adults and peers by using good manners and showing kindness. Be here, be ready, and be organized. Keep hands/feet to self. Physical contact of any kind will not be tolerated. Follow directions and ask questions when you do not understand. Students are expected to follow these rules anytime they are on school property including on the bus and playground. The first violation in a day results in a “warning” and moving their behavior clip to yellow, the second results in a loss of recess, and moving their behavior clip to orange, the third results in a trip to the principal’s office with a call home, and moving their behavior clip to red. The goal is to not only help children be a great student, but to be a great person as well. We are confident that with our care and support each child will find success. © Amelia Capotosta 2014

Reading: Our Reading curriculum uses many tools Reading: Our Reading curriculum uses many tools. Students will be learning and reviewing their reading and comprehension skills throughout the year. Students will read for specific purposes and take notes on passages or stories. In addition to their reading book, students will have a reading packet, vocabulary list, focus questions, an on-line user profile, and weekly in-class level books to help their understanding of the reading skills for each story. There will be a comprehension and vocabulary section on each Reading story test. AR: Students are expected to read chapter books during Silent Reading Time in order to obtain their AR goal, which is a part of their reading grade. Language Arts: Grammar will be taught in Reading with weekly lessons focusing on items such as nouns, pronouns, adjective, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, dependent clauses, independents clauses, etc. Students will have a weekly grammar packet to help their understanding of the weekly skill. There will be a grammar section on each Reading story test. Spelling: There are 25 words each week that go along with our Reading story. There are three practice pages to help students to spell the words. These will be for homework each week. Unless otherwise noted, there will be a spelling test each Reading test day. Social Studies and Science: The first and second nine weeks, we will study social studies. The third and fourth nine weeks, we will study science. Math: Our math curriculum uses many tools. Students will be learning and reviewing their math skills. This year focuses on operations with whole numbers, decimal numbers, and fractions. In addition to their math book, students will have math handouts, an on-line user profile, and a math notebook. Their will be a customized math test on each chapter. © Amelia Capotosta 2014
