Interactive Science Notebook Presented by: Science Dept

What is an interactive notebook? An interactive notebook uses both the right and left brain hemispheres to help sort, categorize, and be creative with the knowledge the student is gaining. It allows students to work creatively, at their level, and with their learning style. It presents all work in an organized form.

How will we use them in science? 1. Increase understanding of science concepts. 2. Use writing as a process for discovery. 3. Improve student ability to organize ideas and information. 4. Record progress and data. 5. Study tool 6. Portfolio of your work

How will we use them in this class? We will use our notebooks everyday. They will contain ALL of your work completed in science. They will maintain a very organized format and be maintained in class. They will be a part of your COBLE Binder and must be taken with you everyday.

Organization Left Side-Output This is where you process your work. Use lots of color, it helps you remember. Concept maps Homework Lab write-ups Drawings, diagrams Reflective writing Right Side-Input This is where anything received from your teacher is pasted, including: Lecture and video notes Lab directions Handouts In class assignments (worksheets)

RIGHT side is “restricted” to TEACHER INPUT The notebook is divided into TWO sections. LEFT side “loves” STUDENT work = OUTPUT RIGHT side is “restricted” to TEACHER INPUT

Materials needed 1 Bound composition book Bottle of school glue Scissors (if you do not have the correct size notebook) Colored pencils (no markers) Writing utensils

Getting Started Cover Write your name and class period on the front cover of your notebook with a Sharpie. Cover Page Feel free to decorate it as you like and in a matter that reflects your personality.

organization Glue the InterActive Notebook rubric over the inside cover of the composition book. Page 1 is your student and class info page. Page 2 glue/tape in copy of left side guidelines. Page 3 glue/tape in copy of right side guidelines. Page 4 -5 table of Content Page 6: Intro to Chemistry UNIT ONE Page 7: Lab 1: Instructions

Table of contents Paste the table of contents given to you into your notebook. This is where you will record each assignment and grade. It will allow you to easily find work when needed. Reserve the next 2 pages (front/back) for table of contents as well. You will only be given one copy and must copy the format on the remaining pages.

Page numbers Number each page of your notebook. The cover page should be page 1. All page numbers should be in upper corners. The front of pages should be odd numbered and the back pages should be even.

Assignments Each assignment will use a back and front side of a page. For example, your first assignment will be on pages 8 and 9.

heading All right side pages must have a proper heading. This includes: Name Date Title of assignment Class period An example with the proper format will be shown to you.

What if I’m absent See your teacher or a classmate for what needs to be put on the right side. Also, I’ll be available during tutoring to assist those who need extra help with their notebooks.

grading Your note book will be graded approximately every six-weeks based on: 1. Organization/Format 2. Cornell Notes 3. Neatness 4. Completeness See your rubric for more detail. **Glue your rubric no the inside cover of your composition notebook
