7 Journal Rules Do not RIP OUT pages or tear corners.
All handouts MUST BE GLUED OR TAPED IN! Please do not DOODLE unless it relates to science. Your ISN should only be used for SCIENCE CLASS and COMES TO CLASS EVERYDAY! Each page should have the DATE and PAGE#. BE COLORFUL, CREATIVE, & LOVE YOUR NOTEBOOK! Source: Gretchen Vikingson at

8 Getting Started Cover Write your name and class period on the front cover of your notebook with a marker. Decorate the first page on the inside as you like and in a matter that reflects your personality.

Page 2 glue/ tape in Cornell Notes Page 3 & 4 glue/tape in Depth and Complexity Page 5 glue/tape in CER. Page 6 & 7 glue/tape in TEKS at a glance. (you will have to cut off the sides to make it fit.) On page 8 begin your table of contents. Go through page 11. We will have two pages per quarter or nine weeks. Continue numbering pages, left side odd and right side even.

11 Page numbers Number each page of your notebook.
Your notebook guidelines should be page 1. All page numbers should be in lower outside corners. Left side pages should be odd and right side pages even.

12 What if I’m absent? See your lab partner or other classmate to see what you missed. Also, I will have a sample notebook for student use. I will be available during tutoring to assist those who need extra help with their notebooks.

13 Grading Journals will not be graded, but they will be check for completeness and accuracy. If your journal is not complete, you will not be able to take any reassessments or retests until you have completed it.

14 Cover pages Every new unit will have a cover page.
This cover page will list all the standards for the unit. As we complete the unit, we will check off the standards to show that we have mastered them. You can also check off the TEKS at a glance page to show which TEKS you have mastered.

15 UNIT 1: LAB SAFETY AND SCIENTIFIC PROCESSES
7.1A – Demonstrate safe practices during laboratory and field investigations as outlined in the Texas Safety Standards. 7.1B – Practice appropriate use and conservation of resources, including disposal, reuse, or recycling of materials. 7.4B – Use preventative safety equipment, including chemical splash goggles, aprons, and gloves, and be prepared to use emergency safety equipment, including an eye/face wash, a fire blanket, and a fire extinguisher.

16 Bell Work We will record your bell work beginning in the back of your notebook Flip your notebook upside down. Put the day’s date. Record the question and correct answer for every day.
