Bellringer Title today’s notes: Industrial Revolution Impact Answer the following question: Imagine you had to work to support your family. How would you feel? What kind of work would you do?

Spread of Industrialization Spread throughout Europe – encouraged by governments Spread to the United States in the first half of the 1800s In 1800, 6 out of 7 workers were farmers, no city more than 100,000 people, 5 million people total population In 1860, only 50% of workers were farmers, eight cities had more than 100,000 people. 30 million people total population Factories were mainly in the Northeast Similar shift in Europe What problems occur in living conditions due to industrialization?

City Life European population had grown from 140 million in 1750 to 266 million by 1850 More food = more people Poverty, enclosure laws, and job opportunities caused many people to move to cities This led to harsh living conditions in cities Crowded and poorly built housing Garbage in the streets Crime a part of daily life Factories polluted the air

Factory Work Factory owners wanted to use machines constantly Beginning of “shift work” Discipline was harsh, especially for children Beaten with rods, or whipped Long working days Dangerous working conditions Wages were poor Even less for women and children Factories sometimes recruited entire families “Wanted” A few sober and industrious families of at least five children each, over the age of eight years, are wanted at the cotton factory in Whitestown. Widows with large families would do well to attend this notice.”
