SIMPLE SENTENCES EXAMPLES: A SIMPLE SENTENCE CONTAINS ONE INDEPENDENT CLAUSE AND NO SUBORDINATE CLAUSES. A SIMPLE SENTENCE MAY CONTAIN A COMPOUND SUBJECT, A COMPOUND VERB, AND ANY NUMBER OF PHRASES. EXAMPLES: BETH HEIDEN AND SHEILA YOUNG WON OLYMPIC MEDALS. (COMPOUND SUBJECT). LAWRENCE CAUGHT THE BALL BUT THEN DROPPED IT. (COMPOUND VERB). THE ASTRONOMER AND HER ASSISTANT STUDIED THE METEOR AND WROTE REPORTS. (COMPOUND SUBJECT AND COMPOUND VERB). SIMPLE SENTENCES

A COMPOUND SENTENCE CONTAINS TWO OR MORE INDEPENDENT CLAUSES AND NO SUBORDINATE CLAUSES. THE INDEPENDENT CLAUSES ARE USUALLY JOINED BY A COMMA AND A COORDINATING CONJUNCTION: AND, BUT, FOR, NOR, OR, SO, OR YET. COMPOUND SENTENCES

A COMPLEX SENTENCE CONTAINS ONE INDEPENDENT CLAUSE AND AT LEAST ONE SUBORDINATE CLAUSE. INDEPENDENT CLAUSES CAN BE INTERRUPTED COMPLEX SENTENCES

AS EVEN THOUGH AS SOON AS AS IF WHILE AS LONG AS BEFORE WHEN SINCE AFTER WHENEVER UNTIL BECAUSE IF UNLESS THOUGH DURING WHERE AND WHEREVER COMPLEX SENTENCES ARE OFTEN FORMED BY PUTTING THESE WORDS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DEPENDENT CLAUSE. THESE ARE CALLED SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS.

COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCES A COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE CONTAINS TWO OR MORE INDEPENDENT CLAUSES AND AT LEAST ONE SUBORDINATE CLAUSE. IT IS THE MOST SOPHISTICATED TYPE OF SENTENCE YOU CAN USE. THEY ARE A VERY COMMON TYPE OF SENTENCE IN ENGLISH. EXAMPLE: WE DECIDED THAT THE MOVIE WAS TOO VIOLENT, BUT OUR CHILDREN, WHO LIKE TO WATCH SCARY MOVIES, THOUGHT THAT WE WERE WRONG. IND. CLAUSE: WE DECIDED THAT THE MOVIE WAS TOO VIOLENT IND. CLAUSE: (BUT) OUR CHILDREN THOUGH THAT THE WE WERE WRONG. DEP. CLAUSE: WHO LIKE TO WATCH SCARY MOVIES. COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCES
