1 Complex Sentences Review:
Simple sentences have one subject and one predicate. Compound sentences have ________ subjects and _______ predicates. Identify which is simple and which is compound: Joe waited on the train. The train was late, so Joe waited on the train.

2 Remember the FANBOYS (coordinating conjunctions)
For And Nor But Or Yet So

3 Complex Sentences Complex sentences are made up of one independent clause (simple sentence) PLUS one dependent clause. Dependent clauses cannot stand alone: ex. Because Joe came to the party after the bus left -These make no sense on their own. They depend on an independent sentence!

4 Subordinating Conjunctions
-After -Although -As -Because -Before -Even though -if -since -though -unless -until -when -whenever -whereas -wherever -while

5 Create Complex Sentences
-Mary and Samantha arrived at the bus station late -I did not see them at the station. Ans. Because Mary and Samantha arrived at the bus station late, I did not see them there.

6 Complex Sentence Commas
If the dependent clause comes first, you should use a comma to join it to the independent clause (complete sentence). When the independent clause comes first in the sentence, then you should not use a comma to add the dependent clause. Ex. I don’t drink green tea when it’s hot outside. Ex. When it’s hot outside, I don’t drink green tea.

7 Create your own -While he waited for the train -Joe realized that the train was late. -Unless you like fish -You should not eat sushi. -I always drink green tea. -When the weather is foggy.

8 Answers While he waited for the train, Joe realized it was late.
Unless you like fish, you should not eat sushi. I always drink green tea when the weather is foggy. Question: How do you know where to place the commas?
