4 Simple Sentence Pattern
A simple sentence: has a subject (S) and a verb (V) can have a compound subject or a compound verb follows the pattern SV or SVV or SSV, but can not follow the pattern SVSV usually has no commas Examples: We spent the weekend sleeping. (SV pattern) We shopped and slept this weekend. (SVV pattern) Jan and I hiked Pike’s Peak this weekend. (SSV pattern)

7 Two ways to punctuate compound sentences!
SpongeBob makes Krabby patties; they are delicious. SpongeBob makes Krabby patties, and they are delicious.

8 Compound Sentence Pattern
A compound sentence: has two simple sentences combined must have, at a minimum, a pattern of SVSV must have a comma and a conjunction (and, but, or, nor, for) that connects the two sentences Example: We walked to Grandma’s house, but she gave us a ride home.

11 Complex Sentence Patterns
Dependent word + simple + comma + simple After the movie ended, we went for ice cream. Simple + dependent word + simple We went for ice cream after the movie ended.

12 Complex Sentences Add a comma when a dependent word begins the first sentence When I want entertainment, I watch SpongeBob.

13 Complex Sentences Do not use a comma when the dependent word is used in the middle to connect the sentences I like SpongeBob because he makes me laugh.

14 COMPOUND COMPLEX 1 complex sentence + 1 compound sentence connected with a comma and conjunction

15 EXAMPLE I like SpongeBob, and I like Plankton.
Because they make me laugh, I like SpongeBob, and I like Plankton.
