Update for Adult Leaders, Managers, Supporters and Young Leaders Youth Programme Update for Adult Leaders, Managers, Supporters and Young Leaders Welcome to the update about the refreshed youth programme

Over the last four years more than 12,000 members have explained what they would like to see in an updated youth Programme. The results are in and with your help the refreshed Programme will make sure that what we provide reflects the needs of today’s young people and the communities in which they live.

Why make a change to the Youth Programme? Based on Scouting’s revised Fundamentals Relevant, fun, appealing Progressive personal development Straightforward for leaders to deliver This refresh, focusing on our 6-18 year olds, ensures Scouting is relevant fun and appealing to young people today. It is also key that the programme is straightforward for leaders to be able to deliver in a progressive way.

What about Network? Network consultation separate to the Youth Programme refresh More information about the outcome of the consultation later this year Network is a vibrant section for young people. It will be getting a renewed programme to support activities and a renewed structure to make it more accessible to 18 – 25 year olds. No amends are taking place to Scout Network until later this year, more information will be available in the coming months.

HIGH QUALITY BALANCED PROGRAMME Delivering a high quality balanced programme is one of the ways that we will ensure we grow as a movement, that we are diverse, Youth Shaped and making a impact on our communities.

There has been extensive research conducted, undertaking surveys and focus groups across the country, as well as reviewing feedback given to the Youth Programme Team. The design and illustration of the resource materials was undertaken by a young network of designers so it is youth shaped and age appropriate for each section.

What the membership told us... More outdoor Scouting skills Progression is important Personal development is vital Young people need clear reward Leadership skills for young people Older sections retrospectively acknowledge their skills Increased structure for Explorers Young people enjoy outdoor activities within the programme, they understand why they are developing their skills and, if they can see what is coming next, it generates excitement and helps retention. It is important to understand, looking back, the skills they have learnt throughout their time in Scouting, and how much of it was learnt through having fun. Particularly for Networkers and Explorers.

The Programme should be able to be tailored to individual interests and needs. It is not a one size fits all. Young people should understand what tasks they have completed to earn badges and understand the relationship between working and achievement.

The focus on outdoor and adventure, personal development, teamwork and leadership skills is supported by the new Challenge Awards and Challenge Badges. The personal challenge is back, along with team work and leadership awards for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. The Queen’s Scout Award and Explorer Belt supporting materials for young people and adults who support them have been enhanced. The Young Leaders Scheme has been made easier to use, more interesting to deliver and more stimulating for young people. Preparing young people to develop and transition into adult roles in Scouting. All badge requirements were reviewed, some have been updated, some have been discontinued and many new ones introduced. Challenge awards are more streamline through the sections. They represent the amount of time young people are in the section, offer an appropriate level of challenge and incorporate all areas of the programme. If the majority of young people are achieving their Chief Scout Awards then leaders are delivering a balanced programme.

We now have three core themes of the programme which are Outdoor and Adventure, World and Skills; the Programme Zones have been removed and there is less duplication of badge requirements. All programme methods have been merged into one methods list which is linked to our Fundamentals. The balanced programme and the ‘bottom line’ checkers have been removed and replaced with Quality Programme self-checkers. The refreshed programme has 222 badges – with more staged badges available to everyone.

Adult Training Updated modules and materials Brand new e-learning Training documents and guides updated The Adult Training has been updated to reflect the changes to the youth programme. There has been an update to learning materials and trainer’s notes along with an update to the adult training guides to support learners and Training Advisers.

Sectional Brands To coincide with the launch of the revised Programme we have also refreshed the five section brands. The revised Section brands now form more clearly a single family and will make their grand entrance as part of the programme launch.

Benefits More obviously a family of brands Reflects the continuity in the programme More suitable for print and digital use More flexible and youthful approach Shaped and owned by young people Developed with young people at workshops around the UK the revised brands are now more clearly part of a single family they share the same colours and all carry the fleur de lis. This makes them more recognisable and underlines the links between the sections. This complements the progression in the balanced programme itself.

You can use the section brands when the new programme materials launch You can use the section brands when the new programme materials launch. There is no fixed date for the current section brands to be phased out; materials should only be updated when they naturally come up for renewal, but we hope you will be inspired by the revised brands and want to use them. Head to scouts.org.uk/brand for further information about the brand update.

New resources for youth members and adults have been created.

Resources for Beavers are narrative driven, they read like a story, and promote the attributes and inquisitive nature of Beavers Scouts. The resources for Cubs and Scouts are all about joining the section, they include the promise, the activities they could do and the badges they could earn. For the Explorers the resources are an achievement log, endorsing and promoting the Young Leader Scheme Brand new Pocket Books for Cubs and Scouts have been created and cover the key themes of the programme, Skills, World and Outdoors and Adventure. Badge posters, badge books and the certificates have been updated too. For further details about the new resources head to scouts.org.uk/programmeupdates

Prepared Preparing to Lead Brand new adult resources support you to deliver the highest quality programme for young people ‘Prepared’ is a handbook for Adults in Scouting which contains information about how to deliver Scouting to young people and details about each section. Along with ‘Preparing to Lead’, a guide on how to deliver the Young Leader’s Scheme both are available to purchase from Scout Shops.

Thank you for taking the time to update your knowledge,
