1 Mi-Mo (Moving-In & Moving-On)
DESC & ESL Weekend 28 Feb - 1 March 2009 Many ES from Scout Troops, can be daunting, make it painless as poss. Similarly moving on to Snet DESA is vital in this process.

Won’t happen unless we make it happen! Role of the DESC Overall responsibility for developing and maintaining a strategy for the recruitment and retention of Explorer Scouts Role of the DESA Information gathering and information sharing

Provide a reason to move in to Explorer Scouts – promote attractive Explorer Scouting Keep in touch with ‘feeder’ Troops Role of the SL Encourage all Scouts to consider moving on into Explorers Notify DESA of all 13.5 year old Scouts

4 Components Mi-Mo Develop a strategy Implement the strategy
needs to be simple and practical Implement the strategy be prepared to make changes if it is not working Have regular communication & contact Review

5 Gathering Information
Knowing who and where potential Explorer Scouts are: Fostering a good relationship with Scouts Leaders and GSLs Making sure that there is an “umbrella” covering all Groups in the District Regularly gathering information from SLs about older Scouts Knowing which information you want and keeping up to date Being aware of other potential sources of Explorer Scouts

GSL’s SL’s Need names ages addresses/ /telephone number This is a DESA task

7 No DESA in post? Several Districts do not have a dedicated DESA
Some of these Districts have others undertake parts of DESA role, ie, DESC, ESLs, GSLs We have found that Districts with DESAs usually have a Mi-Mo strategy Need to ensure DESA role is carried out by someone or a team of people in order for Mi-Mo to work

8 Visible, attractive Explorer Scouting
Being “visible” to these potential Explorer Scouts: Regular self publicity Activities visible to and with the Scout Section (and Beavers and Cubs!) Group Awards Young Leaders Widely publicised balanced programme

9 Need to be seen and heard
ES need to have a good profile in the District good, active, balanced programme media profile? Send details of programmes to Troops and to potential ES Visit all Troops in the District

10 Making Contact With potential Explorer Scouts: Birthday Cards at 13
Other enticements – information on the upcoming programme, activities etc Personal contact/word of mouth – preferably with/from Explorers and leaders Invitation/”taster” events Explorer Scout “road show”

11 The ‘Birthday Card’ Send birthday card at aged 13 years
may be too early, try 13.5yrs Try mail-outs at specific times of year September/January/March send joining pack details of ESU’s, programmes, personnel etc

12 Welcome…to Explorer Scouts!
Make new Explorer Scouts feel at home in the Unit/District Peer group transition New member packs Moving up/welcome ceremonies Investitures – make them special! Moving On Award “Buddy” schemes

13 Responsibility of ESL’s and Units
Make new recruits feel welcome Make sure they get the opportunity to integrate into the Unit Make sure the programme caters for all members Have a welcome pack and copies of the current Unit programme to hand out

14 Keeping them interested…
Regular communication – programme, events, activities Participation…in planning, decision making etc

15 Balanced Programme The main reason why Young People move in…and stay!

16 Ingredients for success
A balanced programme Varied Cover all programme zones Offer opportunities for awards and badges With a little bit of mentoring thrown in

Retain existing members Recruit new members Develop the Scout Network Section Increase no. of adult volunteers Grow & develop Scouting

22 Essex Network Provision
We are working to ensure that: All year olds in Essex have access to a Network Each Network is run by its members Every Network is supported by a Network Advisor and the County Network Team Network members have the opportunity to take part in Awards and Events Stu leading this slide – give out network documentation, newsletters, show network map (next page) Start of presentation to this point – should take no longer than 15 mins

Look at where things are working…and where they are not. And change accordingly!

All young people are offered the opportunity to move-on to the next section in Scouting, at the appropriate time, and be able to make their own decision We support all young people through this process Our administration and communication methods are up to the task of making this happen, and smoothly As adults we work together to achieve this
