Isolationism to Internationalism Domestic affairs- events in US Foreign Affairs- nations relationships with other nations Isolationism- purposeful refusal to become generally involved in the affairs of the rest of the world First 150 years isolationism 1940s on involved in world affairs

Foreign Policy Defined Foreign policy- policy dealing with the world or other countries Diplomatic Treaties agreements Military Denuclearization War on terrorism Commercial Sanctions Free trade

State Department Lead by Secretary of State Lead arm in foreign affairs Workforce of 20,000 Includes ambassadors and diplomats

Overseas Representatives 12,000 represent US as member of foreign service- many abroad Right of legation- right to send and receive diplomatic representatives Ambassador- official representative of a sovereign state in the conduct of foreign affairs 180 American embassies around the globe 260 diplomatic and consular offices abroad as well

Overseas Representatives Diplomatic immunity- ambassadors are not subject to the laws of the state to which they are accredited Passport- legal document issued by a state that identifies a person as a citizen of that state Right to protection while traveling abroad and right to return home Visa- a permit to enter another state and must be obtained from the country one wishes to enter
