Will my child have homework? Since this is a 2 period “block” students will finish most of their work in class. On occasion, there will be homework and the students will have several days notice before it is assigned. We do ask that they read for a minimum of 20 minutes from their SSR book. 9/10/2018

Accelerated Reader This will begin the second six weeks. The students will check out AR books from the library to read. Once they have completed the book, they will take an online comprehension quiz. Each quiz is worth a certain number of points and these points will go towards their AR grade.

Accelerated Reader The students will be expected to read AR books in RELA. They will choose whether they will achieve 5 points or 10 points. Once they have read an AR book, they will complete a card report to ensure they are ready to take the online AR test. If they pass the online comprehension test, they will receive the point value for that book. This is a TEST grade for each six weeks and will begin 2nd six weeks.

How Can I Help My Child Become a Better Reader? Encourage your child to read a minimum of 20 minutes per day. Ask your child to retell you something that they have read. Read aloud to your child. Take your child to the library, and help them find books/materials that interest them. Encourage them to check out books on tape. Encourage your child to read the newspaper. (Even the comics) Encourage your child to prepare food according to a recipe or directions on the package.

How Can I Help My Child Become a Better Writer? Encourage them to keep a diary/journal. Begin a reciprocal journal with your child-they write you a note/message and you respond to them in writing. When you read a word or phrase that sparks your interest – share that with your child. Encourage your child to read a variety of materials: books, magazines, newspapers etc… Look for examples of written language that evoke strong visual images and share them with your child.
