What is poetry? Poetry is a form of writing that uses not only words, but.. Form Imagery Patterns of Sound Figurative Language This form of writing is used to share feelings or a powerful message or theme.

Poetic Form Poems are divided into lines. Lines are usually grouped into stanzas (paragraphs).

Imagery Poets use words that appeal to the reader’s senses-sight, sound, smell, touch and taste-to paint a picture in the reader’s mind. This is called imagery. Example: The trees rustled as the wind whistled gently through the leaves.

Patterns of Sounds Poets also use patterns of sound such as; alliteration, repetition, and rhyme to make poems pleasing to hear.

Alliteration Repeating the same beginning sound in more than two words. Example: Seven snakes slithered silently.

Repetition The repeating of certain sounds or words to create a certain effect. Example: Hickory, dickory, dock, The mouse ran up the clock The clock struck one, The mouse ran down, Hickory, dickory, dock.

Rhyme The repetition of same or similar sound usually in stressed syllables at the end of a line. Example: Hickory, dickory, dock, The mouse ran up the clock

Figurative Language Poets use figurative language to be descriptive. They do by using similes, metaphors, hyperboles, and personification.

Similes A comparison between two unlike things using “like”, “as” or “than”. Example: The water was as smooth as glass.

Metaphors Metaphors: A comparison between two unlike things without using “like”, “as” or “than”. Example: Laughter is music of the soul.

Hyperboles Hyperboles: An obvious exaggeration Example: The books were stacked to the sky.

Personification Personification: Giving non-human objects human qualities Example: The t.v. talked all night.
