The way an author writes.

3. Stylistic Elements
Techniques used by an author. Simile, metaphor, alliteration, etc.

4. Simile
The comparison of two different things using like or as. The warrior fought like a lion.

5. Metaphor
A comparison in which the author describes a person or things using words that are not meant to be taken literally. Time is money.

6. Personification
Figurative language that gives human qualities to animals or objects. The wind cried in the dark.

7. Hyperbole
An intentional or extreme exaggeration for emphasis or effect. The shot heard ‘round the world.

8. Idiom
Language that does not mean what is literally written. All eyes on me, please.

9. Alliteration
The repetition of the same sounds at the beginning of two or more adjacent words or stressed syllables. The twisting trout twinkled below.

10. Onomatopoeia
Words that imitate the sounds they respect. Hiss, buzz, bang.

11. Imagery
Pictures formed in the mind by descriptions, senses, comparisons, etc.

12. Sensory Detail
Details using the senses: sound, touch, taste, smell, & sight. Sticky sweetness dribbled down my arm as I licked the delicious strawberry snow cone.

13. Symbolism
When something stands for or represents something else. A white dove is a symbol of peace.

14. Refrain
Group of words repeated at key intervals throughout a poem or song. All you need is love.

15. Rhyming Pattern
The repetition of sounds in two or more words or phrases that appear close to each other. ABAB, AABB, ABCB, etc.

16. Line
A single verse or line of poetry. The once was a dog that could read

17. Stanza
A group of lines in poetry, usually four or more, arranged in a fixed plan.
There once was a dog that could read
With amazing page-turning speed.
People thought it an act,
But it was a fact –
This dog was an uncommon breed.

18. Shift
The point in a poem where the tone, mood, setting,attitude, etc. changes.
