Presentation transcript:

Individualism and Collectivism In this scene the old woman asks Todd many personal questions: his father’s salary, how much money he makes and if he married or not. This is a good example of individualism and collectivism. Indian people are collectivist, they tend to share their ideas and personal information comfortably. India’s score is 52 according to (Hofstede dimension REFERENCE TOO The Hofstede Centre 2016). On the other hand, American people are individualist they respect others privacy and their score is 91 (The Hofstede Centre 2016). Todd was uncomfortable because he used to keep this information as a privacy.

Power distance In this scene the employee are talk to Todd in a different way as the employee in US. This an example of Power Distance. Employees dealing with managers equally in US and feeling comfortable as friends and according to Hofstede dimension they took 40 for instance, when Todd’s manager ask him to go to India he refused ( No I will not go to India ) and called his manager by bad words, later he calls is manager a ‘slimeball’ .On the other hand Indian employee are feel more respected and inequality with those above them and they scored 77 for example, Indian employees talk in polite way ( May I suggest you ..) and they raise their hands before talking .

Long & short term orientation In this scene Porro think that Todd was hungry and he brought food for Todd without asking . This a good example of long term orientation as Indian people they think of making a good relationship for long time also Porro said ( you look tired so I bring food for you ) so Long- term oriented societies foster pragmatic virtues oriented towards future rewards, in particular saving, persistence and its score 51. On the other side, Short-term oriented societies foster virtues related to the past and present such as national pride, respect for tradition, preservation of "face" (Geert Hofstede, n.d). And in this scene Todd was surprised from Porro act because he used to be short term oriented in addition, its score 26 according to Hofstede dimension.

indulgence & Restraint In this scene we have an example of indulgence & Restraint. Porro said ( don’t worry sir I will protect you ) he thought that Todd will be upset when the Indian people threw the colored balls, but Todd was interested on this situation in addition, when he saw the burger advertisement he didn’t care about the taxi’s cost because MC located in another city consider by US culture and they are indulgent and its score 68. On the other hand, Restraint stands for a society that suppresses gratification of needs and regulates it by means of strict social norms and in this scene taxi’s driver said to Todd ( Sir its too expensive to take you to Bombie and Todd replied its Ok I will pay ) so Indian people restrained and its score according to Hofstede dimension is 74. (Geert Hofstede, n.d)

Individualism and collectivism In this scene we have another example of individualism and collectivism . Porro asked to are you missing your parents? Then he replied No Porro was surprised from his answer and he added that he lived alone and he took long time away from them that’s related to individualism culture in American personality also its score 91. individualism means to be Independent and self-reliance are greatly . We find opposite that in Indian culture when Porro said ( Something I don’t understand about American life , they don’t live their parents its strange ! ) considers by collectivism culture in Indian life and its score 52
