Welcome to Ms. Ebbers’ Science Class A review of the CHS Science Syllabus from Ms. Ebbers classes

What will I learn in Science this year? 7th GRADE: LIFE SCIENCE Workbooks: Science & Technology, Cells & Heredity, Diversity of Life, Body Systems 8th GRADE: EARTH SCIENCE Workbooks: Science & Technology, Earth’s Structure, Earth’s Surface, Astronomy & Space Science 9th GRADE: PHYSICAL SCIENCE Textbook: Physical Science- 1st Semester: Chemistry / 2nd Semester: Physics

What will I need to bring to Science class? Composition Notebook & Workbook or Textbook Note taking is required for this class/ Textbooks need COVERS Writing utensil Pencil or pen (blue or black ink is preferred) Calculator Does not have to be scientific Other class materials Ruler, scissors, glue stick, colored pencils, & compass

What if I forget my class materials for Science class? STUDENT CLASS MATERIALS DESK: You may borrow any class material you may need, but it must be returned before leaving class. Paper, folders, 3-ring binders and some writing utensils do not need to be returned (ask me first) There will be a sign-out sheet for all class materials Tape, stapler, and 3 hole punch can be used at anytime- location is near where you will turn in assignments.

How will I be graded in Science? F 64-0 CHS Grading Scale

How will my grades be weighted in Science? CHS Grading Scale Assessments (Tests/Quizzes) 35% Projects/Presentations/Labs 30% Homework Assignments 25% Participation/Notebook Check 10%

What if I score low on a test or quiz in Science class? Re-testing If a student scores below 73% (C-) on a test, the student will have one option to re-test before the quarter is over. If a student is absent during a test day, that student will need to make up the test by the end of that week during a time outside of class. It will be the student’s responsibility to ask for a re-test and to set up a time to take the test outside of class. Please also note that a score of zero will be given to students with an unexcused absence on a test day.

What if do not turn in an assignment in Science class? CHS Late Homework Policy: *Students with 2 or more late assignments will be assigned to the ‘After school Study Table program’ that will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:10pm- 3:40pm *Students will be deducted one letter grade for each day an assignment is late until the best a student can do is a “C”. The student can receive that “C” if they have the assignment turned in before the chapter test (whichever comes first). If the work is turned in after the test, the student will receive an “F’ for the assignment. *Please note that it is your responsibility to know when assignments are due. I will be posting the assignments due-dates in class and on the NUACS website.

Where do I turn in assignments in Science class? Please turn in your assignments in the designated slot underneath the book shelves. No name on assignment? Automatically 1 point deducted from your score. Late assignments are placed in the same location. Please DO NOT put assignments on my desk

Projects, Presentations & Labs in Science class? Expectations: In this class students will be expected to complete projects, presentations and labs during each semester. I will allocate class time for students to work on these activities, but some outside schoolwork may be required for the student to complete the assignment. During the ‘project class time’ students are expected to stay on task. If a student chooses to work on the project entirely at home they still will be expected to complete project-related assignments to show participation. Students in grades 7 and 8 are expected to complete a SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT that will be graded in January, before the Regional Science Fair. Please note that additional information will be coming home from your child regarding SCIENCE FAIR PROJECTS.

How can I be successful in Science class? Preparation Be ready to learn by remembering all your class materials Participation Be actively involved during class time: Take notes, ask questions, complete assignments, join discussions, etc. Politeness Be respectful of other’s thoughts, opinions, property & personal space. Use please, thank you, leave the room the way you entered it and push in chairs

Rules & regulations in the Science class? Follow all policies & expectations listed in the CHS Student Handbook along with the values of the NUACS community RESPECT & RESPONSIBILITY will be stressed & expected at all times NO CELL PHONES There will be NO CELL PHONES permitted unless the teacher allows cell phone use for a specific scientific activity. Cell phones need to be disabled from the Wi-Fi, turned off and placed in their locker for the entirety of the day. If there is an emergency the office will be contacted and the child or parent will be notified.
