7 Social Media Best Practices Here is a list of best practices to live by on social media

Nothing Is Truly Private Assume everything may be viewable by anyone.

Be Transparent, Be Human Slide Title Be Transparent, Be Human Make Effective Presentations Using Awesome Backgrounds Engage your Audience Capture Audience Attention Understand your audience, share stories, socialize, admit mistakes. Be professional and respectful when mentioning Perkins.

Listen & Respect Understand what Perkins followers want and watch what people are saying. At the same time, be respectful of others opinions and how they are treating others.

Be Prompt People are on social media because they want/need an answer now. If someone asks you a question online be sure to contact the social media manager ASAP.

Accuracy Is Key Don’t know the correct answer? Find it. Contact the social media manager. Cite sources whenever appropriate. It is better to say you are still looking for a correct answer than to make something up or not respond at all.

Does It Pass The Publicity Test? If the content of your message would not be acceptable for face-to-face conversation, over the telephone, or in another medium, it will not be acceptable for a social networking site. Remember that you are representing Perkins School for the Blind. Do not post anything that would misrepresent the standards and mission of the school.

Maintain Privacy Perkins students should not be discussed on social media channels unless that student has expressed permission.

Employee Handbook 10.09 Electronic Social Media Policy The Internet provides exciting opportunities to share and discuss information through the use of social media (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, blogs, wikis). Perkins recognizes that electronic social media also pose potential challenges. Perkins is committed to ensuring that its confidential and proprietary information and compliance with regulatory laws are not compromised by employee use of electronic social media.

Employee Handbook 10.09 Electronic Social Media Policy Do Not Do Post disparaging or defamatory statements about Perkins or Perkins-related people Share information that could damage Perkins’ goodwill or reputation Use social media to generate interest in the school’s products, programs, and services Contact IT/Communications if asked for comment about Perkins

Employee Handbook 10.09.4 Business Use of Electronic Social Media When job responsibilities require an employee to speak on behalf of the school through the use of electronic media, the employee must seek approval for such communication from their department or program head. If an employee is contacted for comment about Perkins for any reason, including on electronic social media outlets, the inquiry should be directed to the Director of Communications and should not be responded to without written approval.
