1 Keys to Talking and Listening
Simple Tips for Success This presentation is a quick presentation on some key points on talking and listening. When presenting, be familiar with the slide and try not to read directly from the slide, but talk about the contents on each slide. Think about what is on them and expand on the topic. Your level of interest and engagement will make the session that much more effective.

2 Be Receptive to what others say
Don’t tune out the person speaking to you Don’t tune out the person you are speaking to Be open to criticism

3 Watch for Subtext This means to read between the lines
Watch for body language and hand gestures Look for themes in the conversation

4 Be Positive Focus on positive topics, not negative ones
Show genuine concern and care for what someone else says Avoid gossip – it cheapens, demeans, and hurts

5 Respect the Person Mutual respect – it’s a two-way street
Acknowledge the background, expertise, and capabilities of the person Avoid checking your phone – let it go to voic or respond to those texts later. Exception: there is some potential family emergency or job sensitive call you are waiting for.

6 Maintain Eye Contact Acknowledge them and guide their attention to you

7 Don’t Interrupt the Person
Allow them to finish their sentence or thought before adding your two cents Often there is a natural flow in a conversation, when you feel it is time to speak, speak, but do not interrupt Also, sometimes this is just about listening to the person, allowing them to ‘vent’ or ‘get something off their chest’

8 When in Doubt, Ask Don’t ever assume anything
Ask clarifying questions if you do not follow something or think you misheard something Everyone is different, different morals, values, and beliefs Be careful not to judge harshly, we all have our own experiences that make us who we are

9 Mirror the Person Speak as you are spoken to, respect the other person
Formal conversations require you to speak formally, informal conversations do not Note: Just because it is informal does not mean you should be dropping profanity. Remember you are still a True Gentleman.

10 Ask the Right Questions
Be sure to ask the right question, this will ensure you get the right answer. Not necessarily the answer you are seeking, but the right answer to the question Be careful not to ask questions you do not want the answer to.

11 Connect It is all about genuine connection with your intended audience. People can tell when you sincerely care about their response.
