Welcome to your Senior Year! The following is a powerpoint presentation that you can use to get started on your college applications.

ANATOMY OF A COLLEGE APPLICATION ! Tips for Letters of Recommendation College Application Materials Checklist The College Essay

A student’s list should be diverse, apply to 4 or more – based on interests, majors, location, etc. Safety School -Most likely accept your application for admission. -Most likely to accept you if your high school grades and test scores are well above the school’s average. Target School -School that will probably accept your application for admission. -Grades and test scores will fall into the middle range when looking at the school’s profile. Reach School -Might have a chance of getting into. -Something in your academic profile is on the low side compared to the school’s profile. YOUR COLLEGE LIST!

There are many links available to assist you with any questions you have about college

Click on “Naviance Log in”

This is what you will see when the Naviance link is opened: Your “ ” is actually your school ID number. The password will be given to you by your teacher, or through the counseling office. It will be your netbooks username and password if you have one.

Click on the “colleges” tab. Back on the HOME page…

The first thing you will do, is click on the FERPA Agreement link. Click on “colleges I’m applying to” link

To begin adding colleges to your Naviance account, start here with “add colleges to this list”.

Add your college list by using the “lookup” feature.

You can browse colleges by state, country, or name.

Choose type of admission and be sure to check what each school offers.

After you find the school and select type of admission, click “Add Colleges”.

NOTE: Make sure that your college list is ACCURATE! Our registrar will refer to this list as needed for deadlines and to send your transcripts!

Requesting Letters of Recommendation You MUST speak with the recommender (i.e. teacher or counselor) IN PERSON before completing your brag packet. You must waive your right via the FERPA Agreement on the Common App. The more specifics you include in your BRAG PACKET THE BETTER your Letter will be! YOU MUST GIVE THE COUNSELOR A MINIMUM OF TWO WEEKS! ALL BRAG PACKETS ARE DUE BY DECEMBER 2 ND. IF NOT, YOUR LETTER MAY NOT BE COMPLETED IN TIME, AND/OR THE COUNSELOR MAY ELECT NOT TO WRITE ONE.

Click on “Counseling Corner ” the brag packet will be uploaded ASAP! Completing the Brag Packet

Pay attention to deadlines and make sure you tell your counselor WHEN your Letter of recommendation is DUE. Give your counselor TWO WEEKS to complete your recommendation. Note: answer only applicable questions, AND don’t forget to tell your parents there is a part for them to fill out too!

What to Expect in the Common Application 1 ST, YOU HAVE TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT

Please remember: There are a few colleges that are NOT on the Common Application – for these schools you will need to follow a different procedure: Letters of recommendation are needed for private and some out of state schools only. Be sure to add all colleges you are applying to on Naviance under your college list. For colleges and universities who do not have an online application system, you must bring in: – a stamped (3) and addressed 8½ x 11 envelope for each college. –Each schools secondary school report. –A transcript requested through the registrar’s office. **Remember, UC/CSU Schools do not require letters of recommendation.

Transcripts for Class of 2017  Transcripts for Common App Schools will be uploaded by the counselor  Transcripts for UC/CSU and other colleges will be uploaded by our Registrar, Ms. Chavez.  Fill out the half sheet, turn it in ASAP to Ms. Chavez.  Students need to add all their colleges on Naviance, regardless of “type” – the registrar needs a current list!  You MUST tell the registrar when you want transcripts submitted!  Make sure your list of colleges in Naviance is accurate!!! If students don’t update, Ms. Chavez won’t know where to send the transcripts and the applications could be in jeopardy.

In Summary! Private Schools: Use Common application or School’s private Application. Letter of Recommendation is needed! Essays are required UC Schools: Use the UC website for applications No letter of recommendation needed Essays Required California State Universities: Use CSU Mentor website for their application No letters of recommendation needed No Essays required Community Colleges – Apply in April
