CLASS OF 2017 College Application Procedures

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION OF COLLEGE MATERIALS & NAVIANCE E-DOCS Tenafly High School uses Naviance E-Docs to submit transcripts, counselor letters of recommendation, and teacher evaluations to most colleges. Most colleges including ALL Common Application colleges can receive electronic documents. All students should have an active Naviance account. See your counselor if you do not have an account. Make sure all personal information in Naviance is correct (address, phone number, birthday). You should always use your legal name on all college application forms- no nicknames! Make sure the email address listed in Naviance is one you check regularly. You can update your email address in Naviance under About Me Tab/Profile.

SAT & ACT Scores Students are responsible for sending their SAT/ACT/TOEFL and Subject Test Scores to colleges. The high school does NOT do this. Go to www.collegeboard.org, www.actstudent.org or www.ets.org to send your scores. Make sure scores are sent before deadlines. This can take up to 3-4 weeks even electronically. If you are taking an October test and have an ED/EA deadline of Nov. 1 st /15 th, please contact your college.

A Complete Application Student Application, fee, SAT/ACT scores, essay, activities, supplements Counselor Transcript, Letter of Recommendation, Secondary School Report Form, School Profile Teacher Letter of Recommendation, Teacher Evaluation Form (if applicable)

Common Application & FERPA Consent Everyone needs to create a Common Application user account. The website is www.commonapp.org On The Common Application, you must complete the FERPA waiver and waive your right to see your letters of recommendation. If you do not waive your right, teachers may not write a letter for you. You cannot undo your choice. The FERPA waiver is under the Colleges section on Common App. website. You must complete the entire Education section before completing and have at least one college added to your list.

*Coalition Application- Don’t Use It We are strongly discouraging students from using the Coalition Application this year. Anyone completing a Coalition Application will need to see their counselor ASAP. You will need to indicate you are using Coalition Application on Naviance so documents will be sent correctly.

Parent Consent Form Parent Consent Form (handout)- must be turned in to the Guidance Office before any transcripts can be released. Please review your grades and courses (9-12) in Genesis before requesting transcripts (Grading Tab/Grade History) Transcript Request and Teacher Recommendations feature will be available Friday, September 16th.

Matching Naviance & Common Application o On Naviance under Colleges That I’m Applying To o Put in email and birthdate that you use to log into the Common Application

How To Request Transcript on Naviance If you are using Coalition Application for a college you must indicate it here

Selecting Your Colleges IMPORTANT Select the appropriate decision type (Regular, Early Action, Early Decision etc). Make sure to select the right college/university campus. Many school names are alike. It is the student’s responsibility to select the correct college.

Tips & Tricks o Early Decision o ED Agreement must be signed electronically by student/parent/counselor o Non Electronic Schools- Postage Stamp Guidance office will mail transcript for these schools (very few) Some colleges require you to self-report your grades (i.e. Rutgers, UC Schools, University Of Florida) o For Common Application Schools You must add the colleges to your MY COLLEGES list on the Common Application before we can send anything out via Naviance.

Teacher Recommendations You must ask teachers in person if they would be willing to write you a letter of recommendation. Most likely, this happened in junior year. Teacher Recommendations can only be added in Naviance after colleges have been added to your list via Transcript Request. Select ALL APPLICATIONS when selecting recommenders. DO NOT choose specific teachers for specific colleges. If a teacher is missing from the list, please let your counselor know and we will add their name. IMPORTANT: Make sure that you request your recommendations well before the colleges’ deadlines to give your teachers enough time to write your letter. Only 2 teacher letters. Please! Don’t change your mind and ask additional teachers.

Teacher Recommendations Cont’d

Tracking and Follow-up Check the status of your application materials on Naviance & Common App websites. Follow up with your teachers and counselor if you have questions about your application status. Make sure to thank your teachers for writing your letter of recommendation. A handwritten note is always appreciated Don’t wait until the last minute to start working on applications. We will be offering “Common Application Boot Camp” sessions on Fridays during the lunch periods starting Friday, September 23 rd. Step-by-step directions will be available on the School Counseling Website and Naviance.
