TH GRADERS SCHEDULING INFORMATION

CORE CLASSES Everyone gets Core Classes English, Reading, Math, Science & Social Studies PE ONE ELECTIVE!

WHAT’S AN ELECTIVE? An optional course in a school’s curriculum Not a core class

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS English – 4 Credits (Units, Carnegie Credit) Math – 4 Credits Social Studies – 4 Credits Science – 4 Credits PE/Health – 2 Credit Fine Arts – 1 Credit Foreign Language – 2 Credits Electives – 3 Credits TOTAL – 24 Credits

WHAT’S A CREDIT? Most 8 th grade electives are worth one Carnegie Credit (High School Credit) Also called: Carnegie Unit, Carnegie Credit, or Unit Students earn credits by passing a year long class. You must earn 24 credits by the end of your senior year in order to earn a diploma.

AG. SCIENCE 1 Ag. Science 1 (High School) This is an 8 th grade elective being offered for high school credit. In this course students study agriculture, leadership, energy, plant science, animal, soil, plant, and food science, agricultural mechanics and local options.

ART 1 Art 1 (High School) This is an 8 th grade elective being offered for high school credit. Students study creative expression, aesthetic perception, historical and cultural perspectives and critical analysis as related to art. This class fulfills the Fine Arts graduation requirement.

BAND 1 Band 1 (High School) This is an 8 th grade elective being offered for high school credit. Students in this course will complete Book 2 of a band methods course which covers different time signatures and key signatures. In addition, students will perform for honor band auditions, concerts and contests. The band is featured at Christmas and spring concerts as well as at school pep rallies and special events and festivals. This class fulfills Fine Arts diploma requirement. Requirement: –All students should provide their own instrument. –Afterschool practices are required.

CHORUS 1 Chorus 1 (High School) This is an 8 th grade elective being offered for high school credit. Students study creative expression, aesthetic perception, historical and cultural perspectives and critical analysis as it is related to musical expression. This class fulfills the Fine Arts graduation requirement.

DANCE 1 Dance 1 (High School) This is an 8 th grade elective being offered for high school credit. Dance I is an elective that meets the Fine Arts requirement needed for high school students to graduate. In this year long course, students will study various styles of dance including jazz, hip hop, contemporary, ballet, and theatrical dance. Students will focus on dance technique based on their individual skill level, as well as intensive training on the elements of performance and the choreography process. All levels of dance, from beginner to advanced, are encouraged to enroll in this elective. Previous dance training is not necessary to participate in Dance I. This class fulfills Fine Arts diploma requirement.

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE 1 (HOME EC) Family and Consumer Sciences 1 (High School) This is an 8 th grade elective being offered for high school credit. This course examines multiple life roles and responsibilities of individuals and family members. The focus is on the areas of personal and family living, wellness, nutrition and foods, financial management, living environments, appropriate child development practices, and transferring school skills to life and work. Through simulated experiences, students learn to fulfill their responsibilities associated with the work of the family and community.

PIANO 1 Piano 1 (High School) This is an 8 th grade elective being offered for high school credit. No previous experience needed. The class is taught at students’ individual levels. Ear buds with an adapter and two piano books are needed. Students will learn to play and write scales. The will give a recital at Monteleone Magic. This class fulfills the Fine Arts Diploma requirement.

GATEWAY TO TECHNOLOGY (GTT 2) Project Lead the Way (Robotics and Engineering) This elective uses a project-based curriculum that gives students a chance to lead their own learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In addition to applying the design process to solve problems, using Autodesk® design software, and creating real- world object with VEX Robotics®, specialized units will also be incorporated to challenge students to think toward the future as they explore sustainable solutions to our energy needs and investigate the impact of energy on our lives and the world. Students MUST complete an application to be considered for this course.

SPANISH 1 Spanish 1 (High School) This is an 8 th grade elective being offered for high school credit. Students will be able to: communicate in languages other than English, gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures, connect with other disciplines and acquire information, develop insight into the nature of language and culture and participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world. This class fulfills one unit of two units required Foreign Language diploma requirement.

STRING ORCHESTRA 1 String Orchestra I (High School): String Orchestra classes are open to all students. Students will learn to care for, tune, and proficiently play one of the four orchestral string instruments: violin, viola, cello, or double bass. Orchestra students will also learn to read and compose as well as critically analyze the music they will be playing and listening to. A wide variety of music is explored, as well as theory, music history, and ear training. Individual student level will be assessed by the teacher. Students are required to practice at home daily. They will give a recital at Monteleone Magic. This class fulfills Fine Arts diploma requirement. This class fulfills the Fine Arts requirement. Requirement: All students should provide their own instrument.

JOURNEY TO CAREERS Journey to Careers (High School): This is an 8 th grade elective being offered for high school credit. This course is designed to assist students in the transition between junior high and high school. During the course students will plan for post high school by exploring career and college opportunities. This course will emphasize writing and communication skills as well as teach students information organization techniques.

SCHEDULING LETTER

DIRECTIONS You must choose a 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd choice. Every effort will be made to schedule your first or second choice. However, in some cases, this may not be possible. Place a “1” by your 1 st choice Place a “2” by your 2 nd choice Place a “3” by your 3 rd choice. Only one elective will be scheduled. Please carefully consider which electives you select, as electives may not be changed once the papers are submitted and classes are scheduled.

CHOOSE YOUR ELECTIVE! Place a “1” by your first choice. The class you really want! Place a “2” by your second choice. Place a “3”by you third choice. Classes may not be changed once the papers are submitted and classes are scheduled!
