2 What is Academic Planning?
Academic planning is an opportunity to: plan for your short and long-term future select courses for next year and beyond learn about high school diplomas explore future careers You will discuss academic planning with your counselor every year 6th grade complete worksheet to be sent home to families 7th and 8th grade you will create and update academic plans Academic planning website: Career planning resources on Naviance

3 Diploma Options and Graduation Requirements
Standard Diploma 22 credits and 5 verified credits Advanced Diploma 26 credits and 5 verified credits Credit: you receive one credit for every class you successfully complete Verified credit: you receive a verified credit when you pass a high school Standards of Learning (SOL) test

6 High School Credit Classes in Middle School
Students in middle school can begin earning high school credit as early as 7th grade 8th grade students also have the opportunity to earn high school credit At the end of the school year, you may choose to drop the credit and grade from your transcript, or school record, if you’re not happy with how you did Language Investigating Computer Science Possibly Algebra Language World Geography Algebra/Geometry

7 Once You Get to High School…
English 9, 10, 11, and 12 (everyone takes four years of English, no matter what diploma!) Math: Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II. Students then move on to more advanced math (3 standard diploma, 4 advanced diploma) Social Studies: World History, US History, Government (3 standard, 4 advanced) Economics and Personal Finance

8 Once You Get to High School…
Science: Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry, and Physics (3 standard, 4 advanced) Electives (4 standard, 3 advanced) PE (at least 2 years) World Languages

9 Math

10 World Language Language courses at Swanson Latin Spanish French
Chinese Arabic American Sign Language* Languages offered at APS high schools: German Japanese Spanish/Spanish for Fluent Speakers Advanced Studies Diploma requires: 3 years of one language or 2 years of 2 different languages

11 Electives! There are a wide variety of elective classes you can take in high school: Music classes like Band, Orchestra, Choir, Guitar, and Song Writing Art classes like Ceramics, Crafts, Painting, and Art History Theater Computer Science Marketing …..and much, much more!

Arlington Tech provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with different careers and skills Courses are two periods long Examples of classes you can take in high school at the Career Center include: Animal Science Air Force Junior ROTC Auto Body Repair Computer Programming Cosmetology Culinary Arts

15 Other Programs of Study
International Baccalaureate Program (IB) At Washington-Lee High School (but students can enter a lottery to transfer) Must have completed Algebra and second year of a world language by the end of eighth grade Remember that you can take IB classes without seeking the IB diploma Advanced Placement (AP) Offered at all high schools Yorktown AP Network Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST)
