SL LLN Progression Agreements Health, Social Care and Biomedical Sciences & Sport, Leisure and Tourism

Agenda Where we started! What did we find? How we’ve done it! What we’re doing next! Discussion

Where we started Aims and Objectives To develop Progression Agreements between Further Education Institutions and Higher Education Institutions to facilitate progression for students from specific vocational and non traditional courses.

Where we started Agreement from partners with provision Bromley College Sport & Health Carshalton College Sport & Health Coulsdon College Sport Croydon College Sport & Health John Ruskin College Sport & Health Kingston College Sport & Health Merton College Sport & Health Orpington College Sport & Health Richmond upon Thames College Sport Richmond Adult Community College Health South Thames College Sport & Health West Thames College Health Kingston University Sport & Health London South Bank University Sport & Health Roehampton University Sport & Health Royal Holloway University of London Health St George’s University London Health St Mary’s University College Sport University of Greenwich Sport & Health

Where we started HEFCE Strategic Plan (Rev April 05) Raising aspirations Better preparation Fair admissions First steps in HE Flexible progression Student success

Where we started Qualifications BTEC Health, Health & Social Care or Health Sciences to either Dip HE Nursing, BSc Nursing & BSc Midwifery Access to HE Diploma (Nursing and other related programmes) to either Dip HE Nursing, BSc Nursing & BSc Midwifery BTEC Sport (3 of the 4 pathways) to all sport related undergraduate degrees and Foundation Degrees in South London partner Universities BTEC Tourism to all tourism related undergraduate degrees in South London partner Universities

How we did it? Entry Mapping Mapping out entry requirements to look for gaps Highlighting inconsistencies, concerns and issues Looking at specific information for Access/BTEC learners Involvement of Further Education Awarding bodies

What did we find? Sport - Positive Feedback A lot of the admissions staff were clear on what a BTEC was and the merits of the qualification The number of BTEC learners on some of the courses is starting to increase Partners were willing to share information with each other and were honest in their discussions

What did we find? Sport - Areas which need more work Acceptance of Key Skills as an alternative to GCSEs Acceptance of GCSE PE instead of GCSE Science Clearer IAG (in some cases) for BTEC learners going through the application process Knowledge about different vocational and non traditional qualifications

What did we find? Health – Key Issues A key issue, linked to maintaining and ensuring satisfactory standards, has been testing the literacy and numeracy abilities of applicants; all of the Higher Education institutions, involved in the agreement, test all applicants using tests of the same level. All partners agreed that this is an essential part of the thorough, equal interview process.

What did we find? Health – Key Issues Good, Overt, Communication – Students know the opportunities open to them Students understand the entry requirements Student Support Parity of progression for students from vocational courses with those from ‘A’ level courses.

How we’ve done it! The agreement Trust and honesty! Careful consideration given to the issues we identified Creation of a document which all partners sign Regular review process and on line version to ensure information can be kept up to date Calendar of events to include tracking and monitoring of learners progression

How we’ve done it The Learner Leaflet Creation of a clear and simple brochures for learners Personal statement support materials Reference writing support document for tutors Additional IAG contacts

What we’re doing Next! New Activities More progression agreements – BTEC Health/Social Care/Social Work to BSc Social Work Access to HE Diploma (Social Work programmes) to BSc Social Work BTEC Health or Science related courses to BSc Biomedical Sciences Access to Health or Science related courses to BSc Biomedical Sciences BTEC Sport (3 of 4 pathways) to Under graduate Teaching degrees (Secondary/Primary)with PE specialism Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence to Sport related Foundation Degrees and Undergraduate Degrees at University partners in South London Schools Involvement BTEC Sport
