1 Opportunities and pathways

2 What you will learn about
Opportunities and pathways 2 What you will learn about in this topic: Roles: provision, choice and pathway opportunities Accredited courses and qualifications Cross-curricular possibilities

3 Opportunities and pathways 3
Learning objectives By the end of this presentation you should be able to: Understand the different roles that exist in school sports Describe the different courses that students can take to extend their study of sport Explain how cross-curricular links can affect participation in sports

4 Opportunities and pathways 4
Roles Students studying GCSE PE are given the opportunity to experience a range of sporting roles: performer, leader or coach, organizer, choreographer or official.

5 Opportunities and pathways 5
School can be a place where information is given and the skills needed to perform are developed and put into practice. The opportunity to learn a wider range of skills and have the chance to develop and apply new practical knowledge is available too… 5

Task Conduct a survey to find out what roles other people take part in in sport. Ask your PE class and your tutor group Ask school staff (not just teachers) Ask your school friends and family What do your results show? Teacher’s notes This task aims to highlight to students that more people are involved with physical activity than perhaps they first thought, particuarly in supporting roles such as parents may provide finacial support or transport for their children. It should also highlight to students that different age groups may take part in a range of different activities.

9 Opportunities and pathways 9
The level of involvement and the complexity of an activity increases as you get older and more experienced. For example, simple throwing and catching learnt at Key Stage 1 becomes a game of rounders at Key Stage 4. 9

11 Accredited courses and qualifications
Opportunities and pathways 11 Accredited courses and qualifications Accredited courses and qualifications in sport are recognized nationally as proof of understanding and competence in a particular area. For example, GCSE PE is offered by all the GCSE awarding bodies.

12 Opportunities and pathways 12
There are many courses that focus on practical application of sport such as the BTEC National Diploma in Sport and Leisure and, from September 2010, there will also be the opportunity to take the Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure.

13 Cross-curricular possibilities
Opportunities and pathways 13 Cross-curricular possibilities There are many opportunities for cross-curricular links between PE and other subjects. Some subjects relate directly to the body: how it functions and its care and development.

14 Opportunities and pathways 14
Other subjects support and enhance the collection of information, images and communication of PE… 14

17 Opportunities and pathways 17
PE promotes health awareness, such as healthy living and an active lifestyle. This links directly with a school’s Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) programme. PE also tackles social awareness issues through teamwork and leadership.

18 PE links to science as it teaches aspects of anatomy and physiology.
Opportunities and pathways 18 PE links to science as it teaches aspects of anatomy and physiology. Good English is needed in sport for communication between players and coaches whereas maths and ICT skills are used when collecting data and calculating fitness levels.

19 Opportunities and pathways 19
Art and music can also be linked with sport. Sports logos and costumes need to be designed, and sporting themes and music to accompany routines are also important.

20 Use of ICT analysis programs at all levels of sport is on the rise.
Opportunities and pathways 20 Use of ICT analysis programs at all levels of sport is on the rise. Programs that allow performers to see their own performance during the action or after they have finished can help to improve their skills as they understand what their body looks like when completing an action.

21 Opportunities and pathways 21
Dartfish is a program that uses video feedback and allows the athlete to see a slow motion replay of their performance. It also produces stills of the action, enabling the correction of poor technique.

22 Opportunities and pathways 22
Exam question 1. Describe a cross-curricular link between PE and another subject at school and explain how it can affect participation in sport.
