4 National Changes All GCSEs will be graded 9-1 Tiers have been removed
Limited non-GCSE courses AS and A Levels have been reformed Last subject specifications have changed for first teaching in September 2017 Grade 9 is much more difficult to achieve than an A (only 20% of current A/A* students could expect a Grade 9!) Only maths and science have tiers (higher and foundation). Science is a pathway that the students expressed an interest in in Year 8 options and the top sets at the broadly will follow the triple science route. Resetting will take place following the Year 9 exams although pathways will not be set until they start in Year 10.

5 The Options Process 18 January - Launch Options Process in Year 9 Assembly w/c 23 January – Introduction to KS4 Subjects 25 January – PSHE Day 26 January – Parents’ Information Meeting 3 February – Deadline for handing in Dry Run Options forms 9 February – Parents’ Evening 2 February After the dry run forms are handed in: TD will look at option combinations to consider implications for staffing and to identify those who may not be able to do the options they are considering or who may need further IAG. 10 February

February – Mentoring with Tutors/Learning Support/Student Support/Lead Tutors 23 February – Meetings with SLT will commence* 17 March – Deadline for handing in Final Options forms June – Meetings with those who may need to reconsider their choices. July – Confirmation of the options 23 March * For those who need them based on dry run outcomes. After forms are handed in TD will look into staffing , timetabling and begin the whole school timetable after May half term 4 students were unable to take their chosen four out of their top four or reserve as they didn’t fit within the timetable. About 20 needed to use their reserve choice, although some decided to change.

7 lessons of maths Either - 9 lessons in Year 11 10 lessons of combined science + 4 lessons of core PE or 12 lessons of triple science + 2 lessons of core PE 2 lessons of core RS 5 lessons for each of 4 options

8 Qualification: GCSE Many are 100% examination.
Some still have controlled assessment. Controlled Assessments are carried out under varying levels of control – high, medium and low. Graded Level 2 pass 3-1 Level 1 pass Most widely recognised Level 2 Qualification Some practical subjects still have practical assessments although for many the exam element is 60% Final part is always under high control

10 The English Baccalaureate (EBacc)
English Language Maths Two Sciences (sciences and/or computing) A Humanities subject (History or Geography) MFL (French or Spanish) These 6 GCSEs at A* - C grade make up the ‘English Baccalaureate’. A government measure introduced for performance tables – useful academic selection for those unsure of the future pathways. Some students will have to reselect as their options combination may not work

Maintain a broad and balanced curriculum Subjects from at least 3 faculties Consider future pathways Consider the subject not the teacher!
