International Opportunities 2016/2017 Anna Lindahl Director of International Affairs Växjö

And so it begins…

A process in three steps… 1. Huh? 2. Ok, what do I have to do and how? 3. Checklist, ready for application

Internationalization

A Modern, International University in the Småland Region

Open your Mind to new Opportunities

What do you want (the opportunity) to be? Where do you want (the opportunity) to be? What are you willing to invest to get there?

Study Exchange student Within your study program Gap year Double degree On your own (Free Mover) Internship Erasmus internship program Link your studying to an international company Thesis Write your thesis as a case study of an international company Do a Minor Field Study project Internationalization at Home (IaH)

Internationalization at Home

Marketing Program * international program to begin with Master programmes * international programs to begin with (all except two)

Internships

Erasmus internship * scholarship program within the Erasmus framework * we cannot send you on this within the regular program semesters * might be possible for data gathering during master thesis (30 credits) *After graduation Internship * not included in any program except for one (EBD) Unpaid internship with LNU/FEH as your ‘legal guardian’ * No * Legal difficulties regarding this

Exchange studies

Why exchange studies?

Short term goals… Change the setting geographically, academically, socially Long term goals… Create added value Challenge yourself Build your CV – What makes you interesting on the job market? – Where, geographically, do you want to work? – Skills set Short term, long term goals

Exchange studies A formal exchange agreement for exchange students – Linnaeus U + University of X = exchange You don’t pay tuition fees to the host university Within EU – ERASMUS scholarship (European citizenship) Help with information, application and practical issues No language test (TOEFL/IELTS) required, only a few exceptions Alternative: – Study Abroad – FREEMOVER Exchange studies – administered by LNU/ELNU

Within the program * you go on an exchange within the designated program semester * you study according to the regulations for that semester * not a lot of ‘freedom’ Gap year * you can go abroad between program years or after your degree * you can combine language and culture studies with other subjects * a way to maximize the value of your exchange studies Double degree (marketing programme) * spend year 3 in Switzerland (FH Bern) and get 2 degrees Exchange studies – different types

When can we go on exchanges?

Marketing programme * Semester 4 * Semester 5 (mktg specialization 100%) * Year 3 – double degree - Switzerland + hopefully France (2-3 places) - One year abroad - Two degrees (one from us, one from the partner university) - limited placements Master programmes * Entrepreneurship master (2 years) – semester 3 * Innovation master (2 years) – semester 3 * One year masters – not possible

How do we apply?

Online application Opens beginning of November 3 application rounds (preliminary) December 1 st – exchanges outside of Europe (bilateral, ISEP, ISEP I to I, USAC) February 1 st – exchanges within Europe (Erasmus, Nordlys) Third application round in May/June– only for spring 2017 exchanges

Who can go and why?

Who is my competition? Everyone. Almost everyone. Will I get a placement? There are no guarantees. An exchange is not a human right, it is a possibility. Do you have enough credits to apply/to go? Who gets which placement? Percentage of passed credits out of all registrations. Percentage of VG out of possible VG. DO NOT FORGET TO APPLY/ACCEPT YOUR PLACEMENT ON TIME!!

Who is who and why…

School of Business and Economics – Director of International Affairs (me) – Programme coordinator » Academic responsibility International Office » Practical responsibility » Erasmus scholarship » Application process You – Exchange studies is not a human right, it is a possibility – You decide what it will become – Your effort is an investment for the future

Destination X?

Where can we go? North America – Most subject areas – University wide agreements South America – Courses taught in English? – Placements in Spanish/Portuguese limited Asia – Korea generally quite good – Japan for gap year or semester 4 Europe – Focused areas of study for semester 5 Australia, South Africa

Where “NOT” to go? Spain (with a few exceptions) Italy Mainland China

?

FAQ Do I have to go if I’ve applied and accepted ? I’d like to go to the same host university as my friend... What do we have in Great Britain? You don’t work with any good schools, do you? Do you work with London School of Economics? Exactly which University can I go to and exactly which courses will I study… I demand…
