APPROACHES TO STORYTELLING

HERO’S JOURNEY

TELLTALEGAMES Tales of Monkey Island

EPISODIC GAMES What is an “episodic game?” And why do we care? Simplistically, episodic gaming is more relevant in the digital distribution age. (Breaking a 20-hour game into five episodes to be packaged five times in five DVDs and transported and distributed five times is an unappetizing thought.) Episodic Gaming in the Age of Digital Distribution by Jason Kraft, Chris Kwak [Business/Marketing]Jason KraftChris KwakBusiness/Marketing TELLTALEGAMES

EPISODIC GAMES Why Bother With Episodic Games? Ricardo Sanchez (2007), writer/producer Must have three elements: 1.Each episode has a relatively short duration of play. 2.Each episode stands alone but is part of a larger whole. 3.Episodes are delivered on a regular schedule over a defined, and relatively brief, period of time that makes up a season Source:

OTHER APPROACHES LOCATION Location and setting is central to the structure of the story. CONDITIONS & ACTIONS The conditions surrounding the protagonist and actions they must undertake are central to the structure of the story. TOMBRAIDER: REBORN

SYMBOLISM “Symbolism“Symbolism is the practice or art of using an object or a word to represent an abstract idea. An action, person, place, word, or object can all have a symbolic meaning. When an author wants to suggest a certain mood or emotion, he can also use symbolism to hint at it, rather than just blatantly saying it.” Accesed 04/02/2015

SYMBOLISM METAL GEAR SOLID 3 Snake vs. The Boss What happens to the Field of flowers? Why? Start at 5 minutes

SYMBOLISM METAL GEAR SOLID 3 Snake vs. The Boss What happens to the Field of flowers? Why? “At the end of Metal Gear Solid 3, the protagonist Naked Snake is forced to kill his mentor The Boss. Their final fight is in a circular field, and when The Boss finally falls to the ground, she is surrounded by these tall white flowers. After a devastating final conversation, Snake kills The Boss, and all the white flowers are hit by a gust of wind which turns them crimson red. Obviously, flowers don’t actually behave that way, but that wasn’t the point. Those flowers related to the larger story: the destruction of something that was once pure and wonderful. In other words, that scene was symbolic of what was happening in the plot.” Taken from and see more at: symbolism/#sthash.UzfZcFOe.dpuf symbolism/#sthash.UzfZcFOe.dpuf

SYMBOLISM HALO: REACH What symbolism does the Halo Helmet Armour have during the game? First Cut Scene – make a big issue of the helmet for each soldier.

SYMBOLISM HALO: REACH Why is the Helmet lying on the floor?

SYMBOLISM Halo: Reach Why is the Helmet lying on the floor? The helmet lying abandoned on the ground in which symbolises the devastating losses and deaths which occur in the game. SYMBOLISM PORTAL GLADoS promises Cake… What is the point of the cake? Only first 20 seconds

SYMBOLISM PORTAL GLADoS promises Cake… What is the symbolism behind the cake? Only first 20 seconds “For the most part, symbolism in gaming works no differently than it does in other mediums. Yet, unlike books or movies, the ‘audience’ has a direct role in the story. That makes everything more immediate and personal, including the symbols. The infamous cake from Portal is a fabulous example of a symbol which had a powerful impact on players. The cake was, at first, a representation of success and future reward, which was later revealed to be a false promise. Then it became a symbol of GLaDOS’ betrayal. hough it wasn’t a far-removed fictional character being betrayed; it was you, the player, being promised cake and then denied.
