The Elements of Fiction: The Elements of Fiction:

Characters A textual representation of a human being (or creature) Characterization is the method used by a writer to develop a character. The method includes: (1) showing the character's appearance, (2) displaying the character's actions, (3) revealing the character's thoughts, (4) letting the character speak, and (5) getting the reactions of others.

Protagonist- the main character Antagonist- the person opposing the main character

Setting A story’s time and place Exposition: background information

Plot The series of events that give a story its meaning and effect It's the story about a lazy, irreverent slacker panda, named Po, who is the biggest fan of Kung Fu around...which doesn't exactly come in handy while working every day in his family's noodle shop. Unexpectedly chosen to fulfill an ancient prophecy, Po's dreams become reality when he joins the world of Kung Fu and studies alongside his idols, the legendary Furious Five -- Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey -- under the leadership of their guru, Master Shifu. But before they know it, the vengeful and treacherous snow leopard Tai Lung is headed their way, and it's up to Po to defend everyone from the oncoming threat. Can he turn his dreams of becoming a Kung Fu master into reality? Po puts his heart - and his girth - into the task, and the unlikely hero ultimately finds that his greatest weaknesses turn out to be his greatest strengths.

Conflict Opposition between forces in a story Internal Conflict: Inner conflict occurs when one is confronted with a problem that presents difficult choices. One must make a decision one way or another. External Conflict: External conflict occurs when one faces someone else or some situation that is working against one's own desires or goals.

Mood Created atmosphere by an author/ how the reader feels. Tone: The attitude of the author/ any human emotion may become the author’s tone It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.

Theme The meaning or concept we are left with after reading a story. The message. How can you figure out a story’s theme? Ask yourself, “What is the author suggesting is true about human nature and/or life?”

Point of view The Point of view of a story is the set of methods the author of a literary, theatrical, cinematic, or musical story uses to convey the plot to the reader/audience.... 1 st person 2 nd person 3 rd person omniscient 3 rd person limited

Flashback The action flashes from the present to the past.

Symbolism ·Symbolism is the practice of using an object or a word to represent an idea, to represent something it isn’t.Symbolism ·An action, person, place, word, or object can all have a symbolic meaning. ·When an author wants to suggest a certain mood or emotion, he can also use symbolism to hint at it, rather than just saying it.

Foreshadowing Provides clues for the reader to be able to predict what might occur later on in the story....
