Health and Wellness Essential Question: What are the four parts of health?

Health-the condition of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being.

(1) Physical Health-the part of health that deals with the body. Eat a balanced diet.

*Participate in plenty of physical activities.

* Get 8 hours of sleep

*Avoid drugs, alcohol and tobacco

*Practice Safety

*Practice good hygiene

*Visit your doctor and dentist regularly

(2) Emotional Health-how you recognize and deal with your feelings. Emotionally healthy person: Express emotions in calm and healthy ways. Deal with sadness and get help for depression. Accept his or her strengths and weaknesses.

(3)Mental Health-is the way you cope with the demands of daily life. Having good mental health means you can: Solve problems with little trouble. Deal with stress effectively. Accept new ideas. Your mental health can be affected by many of the same things that affect your physical health. ie) lack of sleep affects mental alertness and ability to deal with stress.

(4)Social Health-the way you interact with other people. Be considerate. Show respect. Share your feelings. Be dependable. Volunteer to do things for your community. Influences on Your Health Essential Question: How does heredity and the environment around us affect our health?

1. Heredity & Inherited Traits Heredity- passing down traits from parents to their biological child. *height. *eye clr *skin clr *Muscular dystrophy (both parents) *asthma *allergies *sometimes heart disease. What characteristics do you have in common with your family members?

2. Your Environment. Environment- living & nonliving around you. Effects on Physical health. *Asthma-can be brought on by smoke, pollen, air pollution. Eff. On Mental and Emotional health. *Noise pollution ( concentration, Stress.) *Daylight (Seasonal affective disorder. SAD)-causes depression. Where? When?

Characteristics of a T-shirt. What would happen if you washed a new white cotton T-shirt in hot water with a new red T-shirt? What would happen if you put the T-shirt in a hot dryer to dry? How are the characteristics of the T-shirt affected by its environment?

No need to write this. Imagine you have an identical twin who went to live with another family at birth. What ways would your twin be like you? How might your twin be different?

Making good choices Essential Question: What can you do to take responsibility for your healthcare?

Making Good Health Choices Choices you make (what to eat, the friends you hang out with, when to study, what to do for fun) determine your lifestyle. Lifestyle- behaviours you live by. Attitude- way of acting, thinking, or feeling that causes you to make one choice over another. A Good attitude will: *allow you to listen to advise. *help you avoid things that are harmful (drugs, etc.) *Puts you in charge of your health.

Lifestyle Choices Work in pairs and discuss healthy and unhealthy lifestyles. List things that would make for a healthy lifestyle. List things that would make for an unhealthy lifestyle. Each group share one of each. What ones do we have control over? Your lifestyle is a result of the choices you make.

Nine Life Skills for Better Health Life skills-skills that will help you deal with the many kinds of situations that you will face throughout your life.

Assignment Choose 3 life skills that you want to, or need to improve. Write them on a piece of paper. For each skill write a plan for yourself to improve that life skill. When you are finished, place it in the basket for your period.
