Open House ESL Language Arts Mrs. Pousson Conference Periods: 4 Red, 4 Green 2:27-3:50

My goal is to utilize proven strategies for English language learners to teach your child reading, writing, and grammar skills and to provide the tools and resources that will help your child in their other classes and to eventually transition into a general Language Arts class. Goal

 Independent Reading Book  Notebook Paper  Blue or Black Pen  Dry Erase Markers  Red Pens  Folder or binder  Pencil Colors/Markers  2 Composition Books  McC Planner  Pencils  4 Different Color Highlighters Supplies We will be using these in this class:

Reading Your child must…  read at least 1 book written in English per 9 weeks.  complete a major grade book project  have the book in class everyday. Your child will…  be questioned by the teacher about his/her book in order to determine level of comprehension.

Writing Your child must…  be willing to try  be willing to share I will…  model ALL stages of the writing process with my students.  not be afraid for my students to see me struggle and make mistakes.  be patient and aware that my students are at different levels and will focus on student growth and development.  highlight different techniques used by successful writers and have your child mimic different styles.  Provide a variety of sentences with different structures for your child to mimic.

Grammar I will… The students will…  teach grammar through the use of manipulatives, singing, hand motions, etc.  practice grammar through the use of apps  incorporate new skills directly into their writing

Vocabulary Your child will…  focus on academic vocabulary and utilize the Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop book.  be provided with the vocabulary book. You will NOT have to purchase it. I will…  teach a variety of strategies for learning new vocabulary  teach vocabulary that is relevant for the ACT and SAT  teach vocabulary that is used in context (Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop provides mentor text that use the vocabulary so that the students can see it in context.

Don’t hesitate to ask if there are any questions or concerns that you have or may have in the future. Since we both want your child to be successful, I am sure that no matter what the issue, question, or concern may be, that we can work together. Teamwork
