1 5th Grade Parent Meeting
May 24, 2017 June 1, 2017

2 Welcome to the Incoming 5th Grade Parent Informational Meeting!
Ms. Cibasek Mrs. Fakhreddine Mrs. Ferrante Mrs. Luckow

3 Adjusting to 5th Grade We have found that many children find the first marking period of 5th grade to be an adjustment. Expectations are very high and the curriculum can be challenging. We want every child to be successful in the 5th grade. We promise to support your child in any way possible. However, it is very they also receive support at home and that they keep their skills fresh over the summer so that they can enter 5th grade with confidence!

4 Reading 30

5 It is very important to make sure that your child is reading at home every day-even in the summer!
We often see large drops in students’ skills and test scores if they do not continue to practice reading, writing, and math throughout the summer.

6 Math All incoming 5th graders must know ALL of their multiplication facts 0-12 when they come to school in September! If your child practices using flash cards each day throughout the summer- for just 10 minutes a day- they will be much more successful in their 5th grade Math classes.

7 Online resources that you can use at home to help your child get prepared for and be successful in 5th grade

8 Student Responsibility, Accountability, and Independence: Our hopes and expectations for your 5th grade child ☺

9 Homework in 5th Grade Homework is a wonderful opportunity for students to continue practicing the skills they are learning in school- at home. Homework will be given daily in 5th grade All homework will be copied in the Student Planner. Students are expected to complete their homework neatly and correctly. Homework needs to be turned in on time. Students can always be reviewing their notes and preparing for tests- even if they do not have assigned homework! Students are expected to read at home for at least 30 minutes every day.

10 Summer Learning Homework

14 Summer Learning Activities: Reading and Writing
Students will need to read at least 3 chapter books this summer. They will complete 3 book review cards, one for each book they read. *Please see the handout they brought home for more details on what the book review card requirements are*

15 As 5th grade teachers, our main priority is to help your child master the 5th grade expectations set forth by the State of Michigan. In addition to helping them be successful in the 5th grade, we are always thinking ahead about how to effectively prepare them for 6th grade and beyond. This means that we have very high expectations of each and every child in our classrooms!
