7 Vocabulary Students will learn 100 new words. 5 words per week. Quizzes on Friday. Vocabulary in Motion.

8 Tests Students will receive a study guide and/or practice test Practice tests will be the same style as the test only with different questions. Study guides will include all of the information required for the test.

9 Writing Collins Method of Writing Type 1 = accessing knowledge, brainstorming Type 2 = recalling knowledge, “Write everything you learned about…” Type 3 = revised, edited draft Type 4 = peer or teacher edited and student revised draft Type 5 = multiple revisions/final copy

11 Reading Reading strategies Genre Study READ! Reading Logs 600 minutes every month for advanced classes. 500 minutes every month for general classes. Class reading – short stories, novels, newspapers, biographies, poems, graphs, charts, etc.

12 Classroom Rules There are no dumb questions or answers. This is the place to TAKE RISKS and LEARN from mistakes. Teasing, bullying, put downs, and sarcasm are NOT allowed.

13 If you don’t agree, say so, and explain your thoughts. It’s okay to say “I don’t know.” No one is perfect. Keep asking until you truly understand. Don’t criticize people—agree or disagree with their ideas.

14 During discussions, sometimes it is OK to listen and not talk. It’s good to have a MIND OF YOUR OWN.

17 How to be successful in Language Arts Reading Logs – read each night at least 20 minutes, bring library book to class each day Be prepared – turn in class work and homework assignments on time and complete Study for weekly vocabulary tests (every Friday) Study for Grammar Tests Write when we write so you can edit when we edit Read over each draft of an essay and have a parent or adult also read over each draft before turning it in.

18 GPS – 5 th period Guided Practice Study Changes every 4.5 weeks Works as intervention, study hall, and enrichment
