9 9 Independent Writing Students write independently. Allows student to choose the topic Provides meaningful practice at each student’s level Values the time dedicated to the writing process Conferring with teacher Small group strategy lessons

10 10 Student Role Come to class each and every day with your reading book, reading/ writing notebook and Post –Its. Read for at least 150 minutes a week. Keep track of your reading (in school and at home) using your bookmark. Challenge yourself to read more pages and for longer periods of time.

11 11 Student Role Take risks as a reader and writer; try new genres. Think as you read; jot down your noticings. Be prepared to discuss your thoughts about what you have read. Listen to and question other reader’s noticings and questions; give thoughtful, helpful responses. Apply the reading and writing strategies you have learned.

12 12 Parent’s Role Provide a print-rich environment Read with your child Encourage your child to read at home for at least 150 minutes a week Talk about books Encourage your child to write for a variety of purposes
