Mock Action Research Proposal Presentation EDU 671 Fundamentals Of Educational Research By Valerie L. Brown

Area of Focus The purpose of this study is to conduct a case study on a preschool student. The area of focus is to find solution to help improve literary skills so that preschoolers who lack literacy skill can become ready for kindergarten-promoting school- readiness The focus will also consist of the benefits of parental involvement.

Explanation of Problem The statement of problem that led to my interest is that, there are many students leaving from preschool with a very low literacy level. However, I also see that a huge percent of these students are students in low-income families.

Variables  Students that come from low-income families  English learning Students  Lack of resources  Parents that do not understand the importance of literary skills

Research Questions If the implementation of parental involvements is completed, with the help of the teacher giving strategies to parents to try at home, will student’s literary skills improve?

Locus Of Control Internal  This is being able to control the consequence of ones own behavior External  When the consequences of ones behavior it outside of their control

Intervention/Innovation An sufficient description of the proposed action to address the identified issue/area of focus is for me to find some strategies that has been successfully worked in the past research and implement them along with new ideas to see if improvement in the child's literacy skills become evident.

 Teacher  Center director  Parent  Student Group Membership The member of this study consist of only four individuals.

Negotiations potential obstacles  Time- finding the time to conduct the research is a potential obstacle for me however my supervisor has told me that she would provide me with at least 3 hours a week after class to work on this research project. permissions established  Because I work for a head start program I had to get permission from not only the parent of the student for which I will conduct the study on but from my director as well. in doing so I explain thoroughly the content of this student for which all parties agreed.

Ethic Challenges  The biggest challenges for me during this process was retrieving the consent forms. Retrieving the consent form was the first and most important aspect of this research project. Making sure that the participants are respected and informed are a key factor.  Other factors are: 1. To conduct research that is reliably 2. Respect for confidentiality 3. Avoidance of conflict of interest 4. Show culture sensitivity 5. Follow the rule of distributive justice.

Action & Timeline This is my ideal timeline for my action research project. However, it is subject to change.  Jan 5-8 I will conduct interviews with the parents. I will give out surveys and have the return them by the 7 th, and type up the results by the 8 th.  Jan on the 12 th, I will give parents information on the importance of literacy skills. On the 14 th, I will revisit with the parents to discuss any questions they may have about the information. Find out what they understand about literacy skills, and offer some beginning tips to start before the holidays. On the 15 sent home a small package with literacy skills material for the parents to begin implementing over the weekend.  Jan 18 th - 22 nd 18 th I will send home selected books for parents to read to students. 19 th have one on one with student to discuss the book (for understanding) 20 th send home literary information for parents with helpful information and tips. 21 st send question form home with students have parents fill it out if they have any question or concerns and so they can give me a update on how things are going so far at home (this will eliminate them having to come to the school so often). On the 22 nd review the forms, respond, and record.  this time line will conclude until the last week of January.  This action research project will taker roughly 3 to 4 weeks

Statement of Resources 1.Permission consent form completed 2.Literacy activity packets 3.Literacy information handouts 4.Parental surveys 5.Director to release time to conduct my action research 6.Schedule time for at least three parent meetings 7.Parental question forms 8.Computer/ computer programs 9.Internet

 My focus is to yield so that my finding are presented in a an unbiased manner. Although the study place force on a particular group, it is not in any means discriminatory. Data Collection The study will have a main focus however, when I implement activities in the classroom I will be doing so with each child present. Nonetheless, I will closely observe the participant progress during the study. My research shows that this is not only a Issus in America but in other countries as well

Data Collection Continued.. 1. I will use anecdotal records 2. I will send home a running record recording sheet for the parents to keep log of their activities done at home 1. I will rely on some previously conducted research/related literature 2. Interviews/ surveys from parents 3. Observations
