Mock Action Research Proposal Presentation Claudia S. Herrera EDU671: Fundamentals of Education Research Dr. Newton Miller May 8, 2014

Area of Focus The purpose of this research study……… Is to help parents understand why getting involved in their child’s education is important and to try to make parental involvement more accessible. My research will hopefully shine light on the impact a parent can make on their child if they are invested in their education. I will also focus on finding ways to get parents involved with the help of teachers and administrators.

Related Literature I will use a collection of online journals and articles. Scholarly reviews is also a great way to get accredited information. Below are some of the online articles I will use in my action research plan. Five ways of getting parents involved. (2014). Retrieved March 22, 2014, from Dominican University School of Education: http://www.dominicanu.com Gurian, D. A. (N/A). Involved parents: The hidden resource in their children's education. 4 Defining the Variables A group of teachers gather research that proves student’s who parents are involved with their education are more successful. Developing ideas on how parents can get more involved. Coming up with ways to make parental involvement more accessible.

Research Questions Why do Parents need to get involved in their child’s education? How can parents get more involved? How can teachers, schools and administration make parental involvement more accessible? How will we be able to tell if parental involvement has occurred?

Description of Intervention A letter will be sent out to the parents of the students informing them about the research that will be conducted. A consent form will be sent out to the parents asking whether they are going to allow their children to participate in the research. Along with the consent forms and information letter an invitation for a parent- teacher meeting will be sent out. The parent-teacher meeting will be held one week after letters have been sent out. The meeting will be in an open question and answer forum. Parents, teachers, and administrators will share their thoughts and concerns about parental involvement. Two teachers will be assigned to keep track of the questions and answers during the meeting.

Continued…… A follow up meeting will be held within two weeks of the first meeting in the time span surveys will be sent out. Administrators, teachers and parents will be send out the survey and should return them back to the teacher assigned to collect the data within that week nothing past Friday afternoon will be excepted. All surveys will be anonymous and for the staff members of the school a box will be placed in the work room so surveys can be placed in. In the classroom each teacher will have a box that students can place the surveys sent by the parents. Students will be asked to list some things they wished their parents would help out in. They should write how they would feel if their parents were very involved or if they were not. After all data is collected the group of teachers will start sorting them into piles from most important issues to the least. At the parent-teacher meeting all parties will get to hear the results of the surveys and together will come up with ways of getting parents more involved and how the school can help make it happen.

Data Collection Anonymous surveys will be send out to parents, students, teachers and administrators Parent-teacher meeting will be conducted so parents can voice their opinions and concerns. Students will be asked how they feel about having their parents more involved in their education.

Data Consideration (Ethics) In order to assure that all participants feel comfortable with the research all surveys are anonymous. For my parents I will assure them that the action research is not to out anybody or label them “bad parents” but to help them understand the importance of getting involved in their child’s education. I will respect the wishes of those parents who do not wish to let their children or themselves participate.

Data Analysis Interpretation After all information is gathered teachers can create literature to give parents so they are aware of all the benefits of getting involved. With the new information ideas of how parents can get involved will be included.

Action Plan After all data is collected questions, opinions, and concerns will be categorize by most important to least. Parents will get the information that they need to become more involved parents. Teachers, parents and administrators can create a group to help parents get more involved and accessible to all parents.
