DRAMATIC MONOLOGUE

Read Example Together What do you notice? How would you describe a dramatic monologue?

I.Definition of a dramatic monologue A dramatic monologue is about a character facing a critical moment in time, - usually right before a crisis or decision. It needs: conflict, a first person point-of-view, a recognizable tone, and mood.

II.The elements of a dramatic monologue 1.a speaker 2.an identified audience 3. a specific occasion for speaking (related to the conflict) 4.interplay between the speaker and audience, which takes place in the present 5.revelation about the character or by the character (The audience realizes something about the speaker or the speaker realizes something about himself/herself). III.Common attribute of a dramatic monologue A common attribute of a dramatic monologue is that there is a gap between what the speaker says and what he or she actually reveals about him or herself. This is called irony.
