1 Short Story and Poetry Vocabulary

2 Plot Also called storyline. The plan, scheme, or main story of a literary or dramatic work, as a play, novel, or short story.

3 Conflict a fight, battle, or struggle, especially a prolonged struggle; strife.

4 Setting The location where the action of a novel, play, film, etc. takes place.

5 Exposition The state of being uncovered, revealed, or exposed.

6 Rising Action a related series of incidents in a literary plot that build toward the point of greatest interest.

7 Climax a decisive moment that is of maximum intensity or is a major turning point in a plot.

8 Falling Action the part of a literary plot that occurs after the climax has been reached and the conflict has been resolved.

9 Resolution Most often happens at the end of the story; it's the event resolves the conflict occurring in the story and provides a conclusion.

10 Point of View the manner in which a story is narrated or depicted; determines the angle and perception of the story unfolding 1 st Person 3 rd Person

11 Narrator a person who gives an account or tells the story of events, experiences, etc.

12 Characterization refers the step by step process wherein an author introduces and then describes a character

13 Irony Refers to playing around with words where the meaning implied by a sentence or word is different from the literal meaning.

14 Mood the atmosphere or feeling an author creates within the piece of writing.

15 Tone the attitude of an author toward the subject that he or she is writing about.

16 Style those components or features of a literary composition that have to do with the form of expression rather than the content of the thought expressed

17 Theme a central message, idea, or concern that is expressed in a literary work.

18 Speaker the imaginary voice assumed by the writer of a poem, the one describing the events in a poem.

19 Imagery words or phrases that appeal to one or more of the five senses and help to create a vivid description for the reader.

20 Figurative Language refers to words, and groups of words, that exaggerate or alter the usual meanings of the component words.
