Function and use in sentences. PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES

 Group of words that begins with a preposition and usually ends with a noun or pronoun, called the object of the preposition.  I will meet you at the movie.  Prep. Phrases might occur in a series and may have more than one object.  My skis sped down the hill over the cliff into the river.  We sent invitations to Jack, Ken, and Renee. PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES

COMMON PREPOSITIONS

 Can function as an adjective or an adverb in a sentence.  ADJECTIVALS – Modify nouns and pronouns. (acts as an adj.)  ADVERBIALS – Modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. (acts as an adv) FUNCTIONS OF PREP. PHRASES

 Describe a noun or pronoun.  Answer the questions:  Which one?  What kind?  How much/many?  The man with the beard is my dad.  I bought a chest for my tools. ADJECTIVE PHRASES

 Modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.  Answer the questions:  How?  Where?  Why?  When?  To what extent? ADVERB PHRASES Adverbs are movable!

 She overcame evil with kindness.  I jumped into the water.  For many years, I was afraid to talk.  During the summer, the rainfall was heavy. ADVERB PHRASES
