1 Preposition or Adverb?

2 What is a Preposition? A preposition links nouns, pronouns and phrases to other words in a sentence. A preposition never appears alone. It is always followed by an object which will be a noun or pronoun. Example: The book is on the table.

3 Prepositions are the words that indicate location.
The puppy is on the floor. The puppy is in the trashcan. The puppy is beside the phone.

4 What is an Adverb? Adverbs modify adjectives, verbs, and other adverbs. Adverbs usually answer questions such as Where? When? How? Why? and To what extent? Example: She hid the key nearby. Answers “where?”

5 How can we tell the difference?
If the word has a noun or pronoun following it, it is probably a preposition. If it does not have a noun or pronoun following it, it is probably an adverb. Examples: Everything fell out of my pocket. (preposition) Do you want to go out? (adverb)
