1 Prepositions List as many prepositions as you can on your paper, then answer the following: True or False: Prepositions can only be found in the subject part of a sentence. False…THEY ARE EVERYWHERE!!!

2 Definition… A PREPOSITION is a word used to show relationship of a noun or a pronoun to another word in the sentence. That noun or pronoun is known as the Object of the Preposition.

3 Examples… Notice how a change in the PREPOSITION changes the relationship between the subject and the object of the preposition… The dog chased the cat under the house. The dog chased the cat around the house. The dog chased the cat out of the house.

4 Prepositional Phrase…
Preposition + Object of Preposition (noun or pronoun) This is the basic structure of a prepositional phrase. Prepositional phrases may also include other words called modifiers.

5 Examples… My cat, Lily, hides behind the curtains and jumps out to scare me. She likes to sleep in front of the sliding glass door. After a long nap in the sun, Lily is ready to play hide and seek around the house.

6 Compound OPs??? Prepositional Phrases (like other sentence parts) may be compound in their structure. We received an invitation from Stan and Kathy. Between Stan’s promotion and Kathy’s birthday, they have a lot to celebrate.

7 Adjectival Prepositional Phrase
Modifies a noun or a pronoun that is not part of the prepositional phrase by telling which one or what kind. (Hint: They often come after the word they are modifying.) The sound of the hail worried us. It beat against the gutters on the house.

8 Adverbial Prepositional Phrases
Modifies a verb, adjective, or other adverb not in the prepositional phrase. They point out where, when, in what way, or to what extent. Rain poured down in heavy sheets. (verb) The sun was cold for early June. (adjective) The fire spread slowly for a forest fire. (adverb)

9 Prepositions and Writing…
Prepositions can be an effective tool and/or a clumsy distraction in our writing. When incorporating prepositions into sentence structure, keep the following in mind: 1. Will a prepositional phrase added clarity or value to the message of my sentence? 2. Have I used the correct preposition for the intended message?

10 Practice in your notes…
Using the image provided, create three sentences with prepositions…
