1 Unit 2: Verbs, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections 7 th English

2 Verbs 1.Action—tells the action someone or something is performing Ex: Sally __________ into the room.

3 Verbs 2.Linking—a verb that connects a subject with a word that describes or identifies it; the verb does NOT show action Forms of the verb “be” are the most common linking verbs  Ex: He is a general. What two words does the linking verb connect?_____

4 Linking verbs  Ex: He looks tired. [Why is this verb linking?] Chart of other possible linking verbs on p. 214 Tip: if you can substitute “is, are, am” in for the linking verb and the sentence still makes sense, then the verb is linking

5 Verbs 3.Helping—these are placed before other verbs to form verb phrases (all of the words that make up the verb) Ex: Has opened, is being opened Has opened; is being opened=verb phrases

6 Adverbs Definition—modify a verb, adjective, or other adverb Answers the questions:  Where?  When?  In what way? or How?  To what extent? Usually adverbs end in –ly, but not always

7 Adverbs How can you tell if it is an adverb or adjective? Adjectives ALWAYS modify a noun or pronoun, so look at what it is describing Adverbs always modify a verb, adjective or other adverb, so see what it is describing

8 Prepositions Definition—relate the noun or pronoun following them to another word in the sentence Chart on p. 246 Prepositions can be compound (meaning they have 2 or more words) Ex: Because of, in addition to

9 Prepositions Prepositional phrase—a group of words beginning with a preposition and ending with a noun or pronoun The noun/pronoun at the end of the phrase is called the object of the preposition

10 Conjunctions Definition—connect words or groups of words Types of conjunctions: 1.Coordinating—these connect words of the same kind; they can also connect prep. phrases and entire sentences ____________________________________ 2.Correlative—these connect words or groups of words and ALWAYS come in pairs _____________________________________

11 Interjections Definition—express feeling or emotion and function independently from the rest of the sentence Usually they are set apart from the rest of the sentence with a comma or exclamation point  Ex: Wow! Oh, Ouch!
