W AYS TO U SE L INKED I N  Expand and work your network!  Get/make recommendations  Advanced search of people with your skills—see where they work  Look at company profiles to see where people from that company may come from and where they go next  Use Company Profiles to see if a company is hiring  Join Groups

MORE WAYS TO USE LINKEDIN  Look for 1 st or 2 nd level connections to hiring managers and recruiters  Find a connection to get the “inside scoop”  Ask/Answer Questions  Print up business cards with your LinkedIn profile  Include LinkedIn profile in signature  Help people in your LinkedIn Network

Privacy!

REMEMBER! Facebook default settings are ALWAYS the most open they can be. You have to CHOOSE privacy. Facebook is always changing settings—have to stay on top of how privacy is changing.

P HOTOS ! Two ways they show up Upload Friends “tag” you Managing photos: Don’t upload questionable photos “Untag” yourself from questionable photos Control who can see your photos

P OSITIVE S TRATEGIES Use status updates to connect, let people know about job search. Revise profile to emphasize professional/ educational accomplishments Limit photos Choose friends wisely Join and get active in groups and on Fan Pages that are connected to your profession and/or to companies that interest you

OVERALL STRATEGIES (FROM RESEARCH) Spend more time on job search Target companies of your current contacts. When you find a lead, first check your network for a connection. Spend more time expanding your “weak ties.” Spend more time turning weak ties into strong ties.

TO SUMMARIZE... Spend minimal time on job boards Use boards strategically—for information Focus on building networks, both on and off-line Use LinkedIn to visualize and make connections Manage Facebook privacy settings Explore other ways to use social media for branding and making connections
